Burmalaisuutta aistien - Burmalaisen äitiryhmän oman kulttuurin tukemista ja välittämistä lapsille

Abstract

Toteutimme toiminnallisen opinnäytetyömme Laurea-ammattikorkeakoulun koordinoimassa ESR-rahoitteisessa Aistien -hankkeessa. Opinnäytetyömme oli hankkeen ensimmäinen opinnäytetyönä toteutettu pilotti. Hankkeen tavoitteena on kehittää menetelmiä, joiden avulla voidaan tukea maahanmuuttajan omaa kulttuuria, kulttuurinsa säilyttämistä ja välittämistä sukupolvelta toiselle. Aistien -hankkeen tärkein työväline on moniaistinen tila, joka toimii kulttuurien välisenä kohtaamispaikkana ja uudenlaisena oppimisympäristönä. Hankkeessa tutkitaan myös moniaististen ympäristöjen suunnittelemisen ja rakentamisen voimaannuttavuutta sekä yhteisöllisyyttä.

Toiminnallisen osuutemme toteutimme itse kokoamamme burmalaisen äitiryhmän ja heidän lastensa kanssa. Valitsimme burmalaisuuden kohdekulttuuriksemme, sillä burmalaiset olivat Aistien -hankkeelle uusi kohderyhmä ja työskentelyä burmalaisten kanssa ehdotettiin Maahanmuuttajien yhteispalvelutoimistosta. Äitejä oli ryhmässämme keskimäärin viisi ja tapasimme kuudesti viikkojen 42/2011 ja 1/2012 välillä. Kaksi tapaamisista pidettiin Laurean moniaistisessa tilassa, loput burmalaisen perheen luona Vantaalla. Tapaamiset kestivät 1-2 tuntia ja jokaisella tapaamiskerralla oli eri teema ja tavoitteet. Toiminnallisen osuuden alussa keräsimme äideiltä toiveita toiminnan suhteen ja viimeisellä tapaamiskerralla kävimme palautekeskustelun. Ensimmäiset neljä tapaamiskertaa toimivat pysähtymisenä kulttuurin äärelle. Keskustelimme äideille tärkeistä burmalaisuuden piirteistä ja lasten kasvattamisesta kahteen kulttuuriin. Kartoitimme äideiltä millaisia asioita he tahtoisivat kulttuuristaan lapsilleen välittää. Esiin nousseiden teemojen pohjalta äidit suunnittelivat ja rakensivat Tikkurilan Laurea-ammattikorkeakouluun tammikuussa 2012 burmalaisen moniaistisen tilan, jonne he kutsuivat lapsensa.

Opinnäytetyömme keskeisimpänä tavoitteena oli moniaistisen tilan menetelmää hyödyntäen tukea äitien omaa kulttuuria ja kulttuurin välittämistä lapsille. Työmme tavoitteina oli huomioida asiakaslähtöisyys kaikessa toiminnassa, sekä äitien että lasten voimaannuttaminen ja osallistaminen työskentelyssä. Aistien -hankkeessa tavoitteenamme oli kehittää moniaistisen tilan menetelmää. Ohjaajina oppimistavoitteemme liittyivät innostamiseen, monikulttuurisuustyöhön ja opinnäytetyöprosessin hallintaan.

Toiminnallinen osuutemme ja moniaistinen tila saivat sekä äideiltä että lapsilta positiivista palautetta. Äidit olivat läpi työskentelymme innostuneita, aktiivisia ja vilpittömän kiitollisia yhteistyöstä kanssamme, mikä tuki havaintojamme työmme merkityksestä heille. Opinnäytetyömme havahdutti meidät pohtimaan sekä kulttuurien monimuotoisuutta sosiaalialalla että oman kulttuurin merkitystä maahanmuuttajaperheiden näkökulmasta. Tulevina sosiaalialan ammattilaisina opinnäytetyömme opetti meille kokonaisvaltaista vastuunottokykyä, projektinhallintaa, työskentelyä maahanmuuttajaperheiden kanssa, muuttuviin tilanteisiin sopeutumista sekä hetkessä elämisen kyvyn tärkeyttä asiakaslähtöisessä työssä.

Sensing Burmese – Supporting and passing on a group of Burmese mothers’ culture to the children

Our thesis is functional and it was put into practice through the ESR-funded project ‘Aistien’ which was coordinated by Laurea University of Applied Sciences. Our thesis was the project’s first pilot which was carried out as a thesis. The aim of the project is to develop methods which help to support and sustain an immigrant’s own culture and to pass it on from one generation to another. The most important medium of the project is the Multisensory Space, which operates as a meeting point for different cultures and as a new type of learning space. An aspect which is also studied within the project is the empowerment and communality of designing and building multisensory environments.

Our functional part was carried out with a group of Burmese mothers and their children which we, ourselves, had brought together. We chose the Burmese as our target culture because the Burmese were a new target culture to the ‘Aistien’ project and working with the Burmese was suggested to us at the Immigration service office. There were approximately five mothers in our group and we met six times between the weeks 42/2011 and 1/2012. Two of the meetings were held at the Laurea Multisensory Space, the rest at a Burmese family’s home in Vantaa. The meetings were one to two hours and each time there was a different theme and goal. At the beginning of the functional part we gathered the mothers’ wishes on the functions and during our last meeting we had a conversation with feedback. The first four meetings acted as a means of stopping by the culture. We talked of important Burmese features to the mothers and of bringing up children into two cultures. From the mothers, we mapped out what kind of aspects they would like to pass on to their children from their culture. From the themes that rose, the mothers designed and built a Burmese Multisensory Space in Tikkurila’s Laurea University of Applied Sciences into which they then invited their children.

The main goal of our thesis was to support the mothers’ own culture and to pass it on to the children by utilizing the method of the Multisensory Space. Taking customer-orientation into account in all functions as well as empowering and enabling the mothers and children in the tasks were the aims of our work. Our aim within the ‘Aistien’ project was to develop the method of the Multisensory Space. As instructors our learning goals had to do with inspiration, multicultural work and managing the process of a thesis.

The functional aspect and the Multisensory Space got positive feedback from both the mothers and children. The mothers were, through our work, enthusiastic, active and sincerely grateful for the collaboration with us. This supported our observations of the meaning of our work for them. Our thesis made us think about the diversity of cultures and the meaning of culture from the immigrant’s point of view. As future professionals in social services our thesis taught us a holistic approach in taking responsibility, project managing, working with immigrant families, adjusting to changing circumstances and the importance of ability to live in the moment in customer-oriented work.
