TIIVISTELMÄ

Opinnäytetyön tarkoituksena oli selvittää Helsingin kaupungin Toivolanmäen perheryhmäkodista itsenäistyneiden yli 18-vuotiaiden perheenkokoajanuorten kokemuksia perheenyhdistämisestä teemahaastattelun avulla. Teemoina oli perheenyhdistämisen jälkeinen nuorten arki, koulunkäynti sekä kokemukset tuesta ja palveluista pääkaupunkiseudulla. Opinnäytetyö suoritettiin yhteistyössä Helsingin maahanmuuttoyksikön jälkihuollon sekä Toivolanmäen perheryhmäkodin kanssa.

Opinnäytetyön tutkimusaineisto on koottu laadullisen tutkimuksen menetelmin. Joulukuussa 2020 toteutettuihin teemahaastatteluihin osallistui kaksi Helsingin maahanmuuttoyksikön asiakkaana olevaa nuorta, jotka olivat saaneet perheensä tai perheenjäsenensä Suomeen. Haastatteluista koostettu aineisto analysoitiin ja tutkimustulokset esitettiin teemoittain.

Tutkimustulosten mukaan perheenyhdistämisen jälkeinen arki oli sujuvaa ja siihen vaikutti maailman koronatilanne. Perheryhmäkodin kehittämishankkeen ohjaus ja tuki koettiin tärkeänä perheenjäsenten alkuvaiheen kotoutumisen ja nuoren oman jaksamisen kannalta. Itsenäinen elämä sujui hyvin, mutta nuoret olivat selkeästi tuen ja ohjauksen tarpeessa.

Tukea ja apua nuoret kokivat saaneensa perheryhmäkodin ohjaajien lisäksi maahanmuuttoyksikön sosiaalityöstä, jälkihuollosta sekä kummiperheeltä. Kehittämisehdotuksista nuoret toivat esille tulkin käytön mahdollisuuden sekä enemmän tukea perheenyhdistämisprosessiin tai sen selkeyttämistä. Integraatio Suomalaiseen yhteiskuntaan oli alkanut positiivisesti, mutta vanhempien osalta se oli hidasta, ja siihen vaikutti luku- ja kirjoitustaidottomuus sekä koronatilanne.

This thesis was conducted in co-operation with Toivolanmäki family group home and after-care services of the Helsinki Immigration Unit. The purpose of the thesis was to examine the experiences of youngsters about family reunification. The information about their experiences was investigated through interviews. All interviewees were 18 years old, from Helsinki and who started independent life after living in the Toivolanmäki family group home. Themes of the interview were the everyday life of youngsters before, during and after family reunification, their psychological wellbeing, schooling, experiences of support and services in the Helsinki metropolitan area.

The research material of the thesis was compiled using the methods of qualitative research. The semi-stuctured interviews were conducted in December 2020. The interviews were attended by two youngsters, who were clients of the Helsinki Immigration Unit and who had been united with their families or family members in Finland by family reunification. The material composed of the interviews was analysed and the results were presented thematically.

According to the results, everyday life and wellbeing of the youngsters after family reunification were better than before. The guidance and support of the Toivolanmäki family group home development project was considered to be very important for the early integration of family members and for the wellbeing of the youngsters. Although independent life was going well for the youngsters, they were still in need of support and guidance in everyday life.

In addition to the counsellors of the Toivolanmäki family group home, the young people felt that they had received support and help from the after-care of the Immigration Unit and from the sponsor family. Among proposals for the development of services, the youngsters mentioned the need of an interpreter when family members are using social and health services, and more support for the clarification of the family reunification process. Integration into Finnish society had begun positively, but for parents it was slow and it was affected by illiteracy and the COVID-19.
