Examensarbete:
Bachelor's thesis:
The purpose of this thesis is to create a greater understanding of Ostrobothnian, new fathers’ experiences of infant care. The term ‘new father’ refers to a man who has become a father for the first time. The respondent strives to get answers to the following questions: How do the new fathers experience their knowledge of practical infant care? How do the new fathers experience the support and practical education they get from the maternity clinics before and after the child is born. As data collecting method, separate semi-structured interviews have been used, and the material has then been analyzed using descriptive phenomenological analysis method. In total there were five fathers from Ostrobothnia interviewed.
The result shows, for instance, that fathers without former experience of infant care often feel insecure and unaccustomed to taking care of a newborn. These feelings changes, however, with time when gathered experience makes infant care easier. According to the fathers the greatest difficulties with infant care are to hold and to dress the baby, to understand the baby’s signals and expressions, and also to know what is normal and not normal. The practical education at the maternity clinics was experienced by the fathers as deficient. Everyone considered that the practical education they had been given at the family preparing course before childbirth was poor and hard to interpret. After childbirth the experiences of the practical education at the maternity ward were more positive. The support from the maternity clinics was experienced quite differently by the fathers, but no one expressed specifically that they needed more support than they had been given. Instead, they expressed a longing for support from other fathers who were in the same situation as themselves. To have the opportunity to participate in a fathers’ group was something that everyone desired.
Development work:
The purpose of this expert knowledge project is to try to meet new fathers’ demands for more education in practical infant care. In addition to this the respondent wants the course that will represent the expert knowledge project to support the interaction between the fathers and their children, and also get the fathers to feel more confident in the care of their children. The following questions represent what the respondent strives to find answers to: In which way(s) is it possible to improve the connection between father and child? How do we meet the new fathers’ demands for more education in practical infant care?
The material for the course was extracted from the bachelor thesis “To take care of an infant - A qualitative study on the experience of new fathers regarding infant care. A study performed in Ostrobothnia, Finland” (Forsström, 2012). To build a course plan, literature by Björklund (1991), Bohlin (1995) and Forsberg (1993) was used. To make the course even more interesting the respondent planned to teach the fathers how to perform baby massage. The course was arranged in cooperation with a maternity clinic in Ostrobothnia. As the course was meant for the fathers and their children, the maternity clinic arranged a parallel course for the mothers in case of a situation where a mothers’ hand was unavoidable, e.g. if a baby got hungry.
The course was held on the 11th June 2012 and three out of four enrolments attended. During the course, the fathers’ experiences of infant care were discussed and the fathers participated actively. Baby massage was held as a practical part of the course, which the fathers appreciated a lot. The goal to create discussion and interaction between father and child and father and other fathers was achieved. On the basis of the evaluation which the fathers were asked to give at the end of the course, the fathers were really satisfied with the execution of the course. From the evaluation it was also clear that the fathers would like to see that either this or something similar was a part of the public maternity care.
