The goal of this of working life-oriented Thesis was to add communality and well-being of young people in a substitute care unit located in Southern Savo. The purpose of this project was to resolve how communality is actualized in the care unit and how it can be improved from the children's point of view. This was examined by the experiences of children aged 15-18 who had been living in the care unit for a long period of time. This thesis is topical due to the amendments for the child welfare act where the decree of plan regarding proper treatment was added. The proper treatment plan is a tool for supporting children’s autonomy and communality.
The empiric section of this thesis studied the experiences of the communality among the children living in a child welfare unit. The study was conducted by using semi-structured interviews as a research method. Responses were analyzed by utilizing Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare’s method and definition for the steps of communality. One of the goals of this thesis was also to com-pose development ideas for the child welfare institution based on the study findings.
The staff of the care unit was able to utilize the results of the thesis when constructing proper treatment plans for children living in the unit. The children who were interviewed felt they had communality, a possibility to affect their matters and freedom to express their opinions. The children also felt that they had a chance to refuse. The results showed that restrictions and causations are important to communicate to staff as well as to the children. One of the main findings in the study which needs to be improved further was lack of information and how things are communicated to the unit children. For example, the reason why the children were placed for the substitute care unit was often unclear.
