The purpose of this thesis is to design tools that support people with mild intellectual disabilities in maintaining, encouraging and by offering knowledge in a healthy lifestyle. The main themes of the thesis are healthy diet and physical activity. The thesis is a part of the T.A.G. - project and is a commissioned work for Kårkulla Samkommun. The target group for the thesis is a group of six clients from the daily activity center Flätan in Turku.
Methods used for the thesis are literature study, exposure and topic interviews. The results of the collected data prove a lack of knowledge in healthy lifestyles among people with mild intellectual disabilities. Lack of knowledge in a healthy diet and physical activity causes an increased health risk for the individual, resulting in big costs for the community. People with mild intellectual disability may have defective knowledge due to difficulties linking theoretical knowledge with practical actions. Ability supportive tools can be applied to facilitate this kind of problems.
The tools developed for this thesis are a diet poster and an exercise diary. The purpose of these tools is to offer the clients knowledge in questions about diet and exercise, hopefully resulting in participation by choice and a feeling of fellowship. The fundamentals for the tools are to support the aim of the T.A.G. - project; access, activity and fellowship.
