Vasikoiden pitkä vierihoito osana tulevaisuuden maidontuotantoa

Abstract

Opinnäytetyön tavoitteena on selvittää, voisiko vasikoiden pitkästä vierihoidosta tulla normaali käytäntö tulevaisuuden maidontuotannossa. Vasikoiden pitkällä vierihoidolla tarkoitetaan vasikan kasvattamista sen oman emon tai muun lehmän hoivassa ja imetyksessä. Työn taustana oli huoli maidontuotannon tulevaisuudesta ja kiinnostus kuluttajien mielipiteistä vierihoitoa kohtaan. Työn teoriaosuudessa vierihoitoa tarkastellaan kolmesta eri näkökulmasta, jotka ovat eläin, maidontuottaja sekä kuluttaja. Työn tutkimusosana toimii kyselytutkimus, jonka tarkoituksena oli kartoittaa kaikenlaisten kuluttajien mielipiteitä vierihoidosta, sekä maidontuotannon nykytilanteesta. Tavoitteena oli vastausten avulla selvittää, olisiko vierihoito kuluttajien mielestä toteutuskelpoinen menetelmä. Kyselyä jaettiin sosiaalisessa mediassa, ja vastauksia siihen tuli 323 kappaletta. Tulokset osoittivat, että pääosin kuluttajat olivat vierihoidon puolella, ja kannattivat sen yleistymistä tulevaisuudessa. Vastauksissa tuli jonkin verran ilmi tyytymättömyys myös muihin nykytuotannossa käytettäviin menetelmiin. Toisaalta vastaajista monet olivat tyytyväisiä eläinten nykyisiin oloihin. Vierihoidon mahdollisella yleistymisellä ei uskottu olevan juurikaan vaikutusta maitotuotteiden kulutukseen. Vierihoidon toteuttamisen toivottiin pääosin olevan vapaaehtoista tuottajalle. Lisäksi asiasta toivottiin tehtävän lisää tutkimuksia, sekä käytännön kokemuksia ennen kuin vierihoidon yleistämistä vietäisiin eteenpäin.

The aim of this thesis is to find out if it could be a possible option to suckle calves as a part of future milk production. Suckling calves means that dairy cows and calves are kept together, and calf is allowed to suckle either its own dam or some other cow. The background for this thesis is a concern about the future of the milk production and interest in finding out what the customers say about the idea. In the theory part of the thesis, suckling is studied from three point of views: animal, dairy farmer and consumer. A customer survey was made as a part of this thesis. The goal was to hear opinions from as large a group of customers and farmers as possible about suckling and modern milk production. The aim of the survey was to find out, would the respondents think that suckling is a viable method. The survey was shared in the social media, and it got 323 replies. Results showed that consumers were mostly in favor of suckling and wanted it to become more popular method among farmers. Some respondents mentioned that they were discontented with some methods used in milk production at present while the others were satisfied with them. Mainly it was also thought that it is not likely that suckling would increase milk consuming. What comes to the farmer, they hoped that suckling would not be too expensive to implement, and it should be voluntary for farmers to change the system. All in all, the respondents hoped for more research and experiments in practice before increasing the suckling practice.
