Teimme opinnäytetyönämme Peukaloisen perheseikkailut -leikkimateriaalipaketin. Produktion tarkoituksena on toimia varhaiskasvattajan työvälineenä maahanmuuttajataustaisten lasten äidinkielen tukemisessa. Materiaali on suunnattu 1–3-vuotiaille lapsille, ja se on tarkoitettu kierrätettäväksi perheissä. Tavoitteena on leikin avulla tukea vanhem-man ja lapsen välistä vuorovaikusta sekä lapsen äidinkielen kehitystä. Yhteistyökumppaninamme on Suvelan päiväkoti ja Peukaloiset -ryhmä, jossa on viisitoista 1–4-vuotiasta lasta. Yhdeksän lasta on joko kaksikieliä tai lasten perheissä puhutaan kokonaan toista kieltä kuin suomea.

Käsittelimme teoriaosuudessa monikulttuurisuutta, monikulttuurista kasvatuskumppanuutta sekä äidinkielen tukemisen tärkeyttä. Lisäksi määrittelimme äidinkieltä, kuvailimme kielen omaksumisen vaiheita kolmivuotiaaksi asti sekä pohdimme kaksikielisyyttä ja sen vaikutuksia kielen kehitykseen. Perehdyimme myös leikin vaiheisiin, merkitykseen sekä erityisesti siihen, miten leikin avulla voi tukea lapsen kielen kehitystä.

Annoimme materiaalin kolmeen maahanmuuttajataustaiseen perheeseen kokeiltavaksi viiden päivän ajaksi. Palaute kerättiin kaikilta perheiltä kyselylomakkeen avulla. Palautteiden perusteella materiaali tuki vähän vanhemman ja lapsen välistä vuorovaikutusta. Äidinkieli kehittyi ainakin yhdellä lapsella. Materiaalin määrä koettiin sopivaksi ja materiaali helppokäyttöiseksi. Lapset pitivät erityisesti siitä, että saivat uusia leluja, joilla leikkiä. Yhteistyökumppanimme oli materiaaliin ja sen laadukkuuteen tyytyväinen.

Peukaloisen perheseikkailut -leikkimateriaali on monipuolisesti sovellettavissa eri asiakasryhmien tarpeisiin. Materiaali soveltuu erinomaisesti suomen kielen tukemiseen, mutta pienin muutoksin myös uskontokasvatukseen ja seurakunnan lapsityöhön työvälineeksi.

The aim of this thesis was to produce a tool for day care personnel to help them in supporting the mother tongue of one to three years old children with immigrant backgrounds. The purpose of the tool is that the day care personnel circulate it in families. It supports both the interaction between a child and a care giver and the mother tongue of the child by using play. The Family Adventures of the Eurasian Wren playing material is a product made in cooperation with Suvela kindergarten in Espoo and especially their Peukaloiset group. The group consists of fifteen children, out of which nine are bilingual or speak another language than Finnish.

The tool was created based on theory and the requirements set by Suvela kindergarten personnel. The theory consists of multiculturalism, multicultural partnership in upbringing, mother tongue and bilingualism. In addition, the theory contains the phases of play and language development and the effect of bilingualism on language development. It also focuses on the importance of supporting the mother tongue, the significance of play and how it can support language development.

The playing material was tested in three families with immigrant backgrounds for five days. Feedback was collected from the families by using a questionnaire. According to the feedback, the material supported the interaction between a child and a care giver. The results indicate that the mother tongue of at least one child developed. The quantity of the material proved to be suitable and easy to use. Children were excited to have new toys in their play. The personnel were satisfied with the quality of the product and grateful for the co-operation.

In addition, The Family Adventures of the Eurasian Wren playing material was also discovered to be applicable to meet the requirements of different customer groups. The material applies excellently to supporting the development of Finnish and it can also be used in religious education in day care or child work in congregations.
