TIIVISTELMÄ

Työmme aihe nousi työelämän kokemuksesta, jonka mukaan nuoriso Suomen evanke-lis-luterilaisessa kirkossa ei ole perehtynyt Vanhaan testamenttiin. Halusimme tehdä tiedollisesti kattavan materiaalipaketin Vanhan testamentin opetuksen tueksi. Tavoit-teemme oli madaltaa kynnystä tarttua Vanhaan testamenttiin. Rajasimme työmme käsittelemään Jumalan pelastushistoriallista työtä Kristuksessa, jota kutsutaan myös Punaiseksi langaksi. Messias ei löydy ainoastaan Uudesta testamentista, vaan Jumalalla on ollut suunnitelma pelastukseksemme heti luomisesta alkaen.

Mahdollisuus oppimateriaalimme kokeiluun tarjoutui yhdessä erään pääkaupunkiseudun seurakunnan kautta produktin muodossa. Saimme hyödyntää valmistelemaamme materiaalia viiden päivän mittaisella nuorten leirillä, jonne kutsuttiin nuoria 15 ja 18 ikävuoden välillä. Leirille osallistui 18 nuorta ja kaksi nuorisotyönohjaajaa seurakunnasta.

Saamamme palaute osoitti työmme tarpeellisuuden. Moni nuori kirjoitti leirin lopuksi kerättyyn palautteeseen, että he avasivat ja lukivat Vanhaa testamenttia nyt ensimmäistä kertaa. Osaa opetuksistamme pidettiin vaikeaselkoisina ja osin pitkästyttävinä. Opetukset olisi pitänyt pystyä tuomaan lähemmäs nuorten elämää ja arkea. Työn rajauksen takia toiminnallisuus jätettiin vähemmälle huomiolle materiaalimme tehtäväehdotuksissa.

Nuorisotyönohjaajien havaintojen mukaan materiaalimme oli liian syväluotaava käytettäväksi sellaisenaan laajan ikäryhmän tai tietotasoltaan vaihtelevan ryhmän kanssa. Ohjaajan ennakkotietämys ryhmän tasosta on avainasemassa valittaessa hyödynnettävää osaa materiaalista.

Kaikkiaan palaute oli positiivista ja osa leirillä olleista nuorista kertoivat hahmottavansa nyt Vanhan testamentin paremmin osana Raamattua. Nuoret kokivat Vanhan testamentin opiskelun hyödylliseksi hahmottaessaan Raamatun kokonaisuutta.

Our goal rose from the working life. The youth in the Finnish Lutheran church is not familiar with the Old Testament. This was alarming for it contains two thirds of our Holy Scriptures. During the data gathering it became evident that many of our peer students including us had little information on the subject. Our aim was to diminish the dubiety towards the Old Testament. In addition, the objective was to emphasize the fact that Messiah is not only found in the New Testament. Instead, God had a plan for our salvation from the very beginning. We aimed to build a Bible teaching material which could answer to these needs.

This thesis is a product. A Lutheran congregation in the Capital area offered a possibil-ity to test our teaching material. We spent five days at the beginning of the summer studying Bible on a camp that was aimed to 15–18 years old adolescents. In total, there were 18 adolescents and two youth workers from the congregation as participants. The camp was organized in summer 2012.

At the end of the camp, we collected written feedback on our material from the partici-pants. According to the feedback, the Old Testament was considered interesting. Our Bible teaching material proved to be successful and it answered to the needs. Many adolescents wrote that it was the first time they ever read the Old Testament. Some of the lessons were assessed as abstruse. It would be more effective to draw more connections to their everyday life during the studies - an aspect that is slightly neglected in the suggested assignments and group work in the material.

Evaluation from our co-workers revealed interesting views on the material. Youth workers stated that they had also discovered new perspectives on Messiah in Scriptures. The material is profound and therefore the experience of the instructors and consideration are crucial when choosing the contents of the teaching for a group.

The results were uniformly positive. A few adolescents expressed that now they under-stand why the Old Testament belongs to the Bible and is an important part of the salva-tion history God has provided us. This Bible teaching material can be modified to suit the Bible studies of different age groups and working methods.
