Rintasyöpäpotilaiden saama tieto potilasjärjestöistä ja kokemukset vertaistuen oikea-aikaisuudesta

Abstract

Tässä opinnäytetyössä selvitettiin kvantitatiivisen tutkimuksen avulla rintasyöpäpotilaiden näkemyksiä ja kokemuksia vertaistuen merkityksestä. Opinnäytetyön tarkoituksena oli selvittää, mitä tietoa rintasyöpäpotilaat saavat potilasjärjestöiltä. Lisäksi tutkittiin, saavatko rintasyöpäpotilaat riittävästi tietoa potilasjärjestöjen tarjoamasta vertaistuesta ja missä sairauden vaiheessa vertaistuki on erityisen merkityksellistä. Opinnäytetyö toteutettiin yhdessä Espoon Järjestöjen Yhteisö ry:n Vertaisresepti-hankkeen kanssa. Tavoitteenamme oli tuottaa järjestölle tutkittua tietoa vertaistuen merkityksestä ja kolmannen sektorin palveluiden tiedonkulusta hoitohenkilökunnalta potilaille. Espoon Järjestöjen Yhteisö ry voi käyttää saamaamme tietoa toimintansa kehittämiseen.

Opinnäytetyön kohteena olivat rintasyöpään sairastuneet, joilta oli leikattu uusi tai uusiutunut rintasyöpä. Tutkimusaineisto kerättiin kyselylomakkeen avulla Naistenklinikan rintarauhaskirurgian osaston R31 potilailta (n=65). Aineisto analysoitiin SPSS-ohjelman avulla.

Suurin osa vastanneista koki saaneensa riittävästi tietoa potilasjärjestöistä osaston henkilökunnalta. Vastaajat olivat saaneet eniten tietoa potilasjärjestöiltä esitteistä ja potilasoppaista. He kokivat saaneensa melko tasapuolisesti hyödyllistä vertaistukea Internetin keskustelufoorumilta, ryhmätoiminnasta sekä tukihenkilö-/ystävätoiminnasta. Suurin osa vastanneista koki vertaistuen tarpeen erityisen merkitykselliseksi rintasyöpähoitojen aikana sekä seuranta- ja jälkihoidon aikana. Eniten vertaistuen tarve kohdistui vastanneilla erilaisten tuntemusten jakamiseen.

Opinnäytetyön jatkokehittämisideana ehdotamme tutkimusta, jonka kohderyhmänä ovat myöhemmässä vaiheessa sairautta olevat rintasyöpäpotilaat. Tarpeellista on myös kartoittaa eri-ikäisten rintasyöpäpotilaiden vertaistuen tarpeita ja niiden eroja.

This quantitative research concerns the importance of peer support, experienced by breast cancer patients. The aim of the research was to find out how breast cancer patients are informed by patient organizations. Furthermore, our aim was to study if breast cancer patients are well informed of peer support, and during which period of their illness patients especially need peer support. In our research, we cooperated with Espoon Järjestöjen Yhteisö ry Organisation and their Vertaisresepti project. Our aim was to inform the organization on the importance of peer support, and also on how patients are informed by the hospital staff on third-sector services. Espoon Järjestöjen Yhteisö ry Organisation can use the research results to develop their work.

The target group of the study consists of breast cancer patients who have been operated for the first or second time. The research was carried out with a questionnaire at Naistenklinikka Hospital, department R31 (N=65). The research material was statistically analysed with SPSS.

Most patients experienced that they were sufficiently informed on patient organisations by the hospital staff. They received most of the information from leaflets and guide books written for patients. In their opinion, peer support from Internet forums, group activities, and tutors was equally useful. Most patients expressed that they needed peer support especially during breast cancer treatments and follow-up treatment periods. The patients especially needed peers to share their feelings with.

For further study, we suggest a research with the target group of follow-up breast cancer patients at a later phase of illness. It would also be necessary to study the differences in peer support needs of patients of different age groups.
