The purpose of this thesis is to find out if it today is accepted for the personnel in customer service positions in the hotel and casino industry to have visible piercings and tattoos. I want to get an insight of how the companies are thinking and to get to know their point of view regarding how the company’s image is influenced by their employee’s appearances.
To reach my goal I have used a qualitative research method. I have interviewed two small hotels and two bigger ones that are a part of a hotel chain, as well as both casinos in Finland. The interview questions were based on the companies’ personnel policies and how they stand towards piercings and tattoos among their employees.
The results show that most of the companies expect their employees to remove their piercings while working and cover up their tattoos. There were also exceptions; some companies approved some piercings to be worn and a part of a tattoo or a small tattoo to be visible. All the respondents are positive that this will change in the future and we will probably in some extent start seeing more body art on customer service personnel.
