Tulkki vai doula? Viittomakielen tulkin rooli synnytystulkkaustilanteessa

Abstract

Opinnäytetyöni tilaajana toimi Viittomakielialan Osuuskunta Via ja tilaaja ohjaajana Anitta Malmberg. Opinnäytetyöni tavoite oli selvittää viiden viittomakielen tulkin näkemys roolistaan synnytystulkkaustilanteessa. Aikaisempaa tutkittua tietoa asiasta ei ole saatavilla. Tutkielmassani oli kaksi tutkimuskysymystä. Ensimmäisellä tutkimuskysymyksellä selvitin toimivatko viittomakielen tulkit synnytystulkkaustilanteessa noudattaen viittomakielen tulkkien ammattieettisiä ohjeita, ja jos ohjeita rikotaan niin miksi. Toisella tutkimuskysymyksellä selvitin millainen on viittomakielen tulkin rooli synnytystulkkaustilanteessa muihin asioimistulkkaustilanteisiin verrattuna.

Laadullisen opinnäytetyöni tutkimusmenetelminä oli puolistrukturoitu kyselylomake ja puolistrukturoitu haastattelu. Kyselylomake oli sähköinen ja siihen vastasi neljä viittomakielen tulkkia tammikuussa 2013. Haastattelu oli teemahaastattelu. Sen toteutin yhdelle viittomakielen tulkille tammikuussa 2013, kyseinen tulkki on myös doula. Hyödynsin työssäni lisäksi neljää sekundääriaineistoa, jotka kaikki olivat Anitta Malmbergin vuoden 2012 syksyn aikana tekemiä puolistrukturoituja haastatteluita.

Opinnäytetyöni tuloksista selvisi, että viisi viittomakielen tulkkia kokee toimivansa synnytystulkkaustilanteessa noudattaen ammattieettisiä ohjeita. Kuitenkin tilanteen luonteen takia osa tulkeista toimii joustavasti ammattieettisten ohjeiden näkökulmasta. Vastanneista viidestä tulkista, kolme koki synnytystulkkaustilanteessa roolin olevan erilainen ja kaksi tulkkia koki roolin olevan samanlainen tai melkein samanlainen verrattuna muihin asioimistulkkaustilanteisiin. Kyselyn ja haastattelujen perusteella kaksi tulkeista koki olevansa tilanteessa tulkin lisäksi synnytystukihenkilöitä.

This thesis was commissioned by Via Sign Language Sector Cooperative, and the commissioning supervisor was Anitta Malmberg. The goal of this thesis was to find out how five sign language interpreters viewed their roles in a childbirth interpreting situation. No previous research data on this topic exists. The thesis had two separate research questions. The first research question was whether or not sign language interpreters operate in accordance with the professional ethical guidelines for sign language interpreters in a childbirth interpreting situation. If the interpreters did not follow the guidelines, I wanted to find out why. The second research question focused on the role of a sign language interpreter in a childbirth interpreting situation in comparison with other community interpreting situations.

The research methods of this qualitative thesis were a semi-structured questionnaire and a semi-structured interview. The questionnaire was in an electronic format, and four sign language interpreters answered it in January 2013. The interview was a focused interview conducted with one sign language interpreter in January 2013. This particular interpreter also works as a doula. I also utilised four secondary data sources in my thesis, all of which were semi-structured interviews conducted by Anitta Malmberg in the autumn of 2012.

The results of my thesis indicate that five out of five sign language interpreters felt they follow their professional ethical guidelines in a childbirth interpreting situation. However, due to the nature of the situation, some of the interpreters reported that they follow the guidelines flexibly. Of the five interpreters who answered, three felt that, in childbirth interpreting, their role as an interpreter was different and two interpreters said they felt their role was the same, or almost the same, as during other community interpreting assignments. Based on the questionnaire and the interviews, two of the interpreters stated that they felt that, in a childbirth interpreting situation, they not only acted as interpreters, but also as birth support persons.
