Alusta loppuun : Opas itsenäisille ääniteomakustanteen tekijöille

Abstract

Tässä opinnäytetyössä olen pyrkinyt luomaan omakustannetuottajille laajan tietopaketin siitä, miten tehdä ja tuottaa musiikkia. Opinnäytetyötä varten tehtiin sekä määrällistä että laadullista menetelmää hyödyntävä internetkyselytutkimus joulukuussa 2012 - tammikuussa 2013. Sen tavoitteena oli selvittää, minkälaisia omakustanteita Suomessa tehdään ja miten näiden projektien toteutus menee. Tutkimus on ensimmäinen lajiaan Suomessa ja sen tarkoituksena oli tutkia omakustanteita projekteina, sen tie-don perusteella, jota tekijät projekteistaan antoivat.

Opinnäytetyössä kerrotaan, miten tutkimusta analysoitiin ja sen kautta kerätyn datan valossa paikan-nettiin painotuksia siitä, minkälaista informaatiota omakustanteiden tekijät kaipaavat ja missä esimer-kiksi aloittelevat tekijät epäonnistuvat. Tutkimustietoa kerättiin erityisesti erilaisten työskentelytapojen käytöstä ja ongelmien yleisyydestä. Tätä tietoa analysoitiin esimerkiksi etsimällä materiaalista selkeitä korrelaatioita, tutkimalla yleisyyksiä ja tuomalla näitä materiaalin löydöksiä esille oppaan kirjoittamisen näkökulmasta.

Analyysissä saadusta tiedosta johtamalla, kirjoitin äänitetuotannon tarkoituksiin opas, jonka painopis-teet ja osan tietopohjaa tutkimus muodosti. Opas käsittelee laajasti esille tulleita puutteita omakustan-teiden tekemisessä ja muuta oleellista tietoa ääniteprojektin läpiviennistä. Opas ei ole erityisesti suun-nattu millekään musiikin lajille ja se on suunniteltu niin, että sitä voi hyödyntää kaikenlaisessa musiikis-sa demotuotannoista isompiin julkaistaviin äänitteisiin. Opas lienee kaikkein hyödyllisin alkuvaiheessa oleville, esimerkiksi yksittäisiä kotiäänityksiä tai yhden varsinaisen ääniteprojektin tehneille. Tosin siitä saattaa saada uutta näkökulmaa pitempäänkin tehnyt toimija.

The purpose of this thesis is to create a comprehensive study of how to make, record and produce music. In December 2012 and January 2013 a survey was carried out in order to find out what kind of self published records are made in Finland and how. This survey utilized both quantitative and qualita-tive methods and was the first of its kind in Finland. The goal of the study is to focus on the projects rather than their makers and study the art form via their view.

The thesis deals with the collected data and analyzes it to create an understanding over what kind of information is required by the amateur musicians and producers in the field, and in what production stages do the beginners most often have problems with. The data collection focused on the preva-lence of the different production methods and problems. This information was analyzed by means of correlation analyzing and presentation of incidence. Based on the acquired data, a guide book was written for the purpose of record production.

The emphasis of the guide book is on the points of production where the most problems occurred according to the study. The guide book is not specified to any particular genre of music, rather it is designed in a way that it can be used in a wide variety of productions from demo-tapes to larger scale recordings. The guide is probably most suited for relatively new record producers who have the expe-rience of working with a few productions before reading this - although it is also noted that a guide book of this range can give a fresh perspective to a person with more significant experience in the field.
