Kollaaseja yöstä : Yön ilmaiseminen kuvataiteessa

Abstract

Opinnäytetyössäni käsittelen yön ilmaisemista kuvataiteessa. Pyrin tuomaan esille yön ilmaisemiseen liittyviä tärkeimpiä ja yleisimpiä piirteitä ja vastaamaan kysymyksiin miten, milloin ja miksi yötä on ilmaistu kuvataiteessa. Tutkimuskysymykseni on ”Miten yötä on ilmaistu kuvataiteessa?” ja tavoitteenani oli löytää vastaus siihen ilmiön ymmärtämisen, selittämisen, tulkinnan ja soveltamisen kautta.

Teoriaosassa selvennän opinnäytetyöhöni liittyviä käsitteitä sekä tutkin yön ilmaisemista eri aikakausien, taidesuuntausten, taiteilijoiden ja kuvaelementtien sekä symboliikan kautta. Otin esille yleisimpiä yön ilmaisukeinoja ja pyrin tuomaan näkyviin eri aikakausille ominaista suhdetta yöhön. Teososana tein kolme kollaasia, joissa tuon esille yön ilmaisukeinoja eri tavoin.

Tärkeimpänä aineistona käytin kulttuurihistorioitsija Riikka Forsströmin vuonna 2012 julkaisemaa kirjaa Yön valtakunta. Muita kirjallisia lähteitä olivat erilaiset taidehistoriakirjat sekä Internetistä löytyvä materiaali ja yöaiheiset taideteokset. Opinnäytetyöni toteutin tutustumalla aluksi yöaiheisiin taideteoksiin ja erittelemällä niistä yleisimpiä ja toistuvia yön ilmaisemiskeinoja. Tutustuin yön kuvaamiseen eri aikakausina ja taidesuuntauksia sekä perehdyin yöaiheisten teosten taiteilijoihin. Teososan työt kokosin oppimistani ilmaisukeinoista.

Tutkimustuloksena paljastui, että jokainen taiteen tyylisuunta sisältää yöaiheisia teoksia: erityisen yleistä se on ollut täysrenessanssin sekä barokin taiteessa chiaroscuro- tekniikkana, romantiikan sekä goottilaisen taiteen aikaan nostalgisena kaipauksena menneisyyden öihin ja surrealismin taiteessa alitajuisen ja logiikkaa uhmaavan taiteen ilmaisuna. Myös nykyään yötä kuvataan paljon sekä perinteisillä taiteen tekotavoilla että tekniikan kehityksen kautta suosituksi tulleilla uusilla tekniikoilla. Yön kuvaamisen aiheet vaihtuvat taidesuuntausten ihanteiden sekä ajalle ominaisen ilmaisun mukaan, mutta yön peruselementit ovat aina pysyneet samoina. Näitä ovat esimerkiksi kuu, tähdet ja yleensä mustalla tai tummansinisellä värillä kuvattu pimeys. Yöaiheisille teoksille suosittuja aiheita ovat aina olleet muun muassa uskonto, myytit, historia, kuolema ja politiikka. Viime vuosina noussut kiinnostus yötä kohtaan kertoo siitä, etteivät ihmisille enää riitä vain pelkät faktat elämän ja kuoleman arvoituksen ratkaisemiseksi. On havaittu, että näkyväisen todellisuuden tuolla puolen sijaitsee toinen paljon ihmeellisempi maailma, yön valtakunta.

My bachelor’s thesis deals with the expression of night in visual arts. My aim is to bring out the most important and common features of expression of night and to answer the questions of how, when and why night is expressed in the visual arts. My research question is as follows: “How is night expressed in the visual arts?” and this thesis research finds an answer to this question by understanding, explanation, interpretation, and application of the phenomenon.

In the theoretical part I define the concepts related to my bachelor’s thesis as well as examine the expression of nigh in different time periods, art movements, artists and both picture elements and symbolism. I deal with the most common means of expression of the night to bring out the characteristics of night in various time periods. In the artwork part in my thesis, I did three collages in which I bring forth the means of expression of the night in different ways.

The main material I used was a book Yön valtakunta (2012) by Riikka Forsström, a cultural historian. Other written material sources were different art history books as well as material found on the Internet and night-themed works of art. My bachelor’s thesis was carried out at first by researching night-themed works of art and identifying the most common and frequent means of expressing night. I explored how night was represented in different time periods and art movements as well as studied artists who used night as a theme in their artworks. I combined my works of art by integrating the information I learned about means of expression.

The results of the research revealed that every art genre includes night-themed artworks and this theme was especially common in High Renaissance and Baroque art in chiaroscuro technique, in Romantic and Gothic art as nostalgic longings of the past nights and in surrealism as art of expression which defied subconscious and logic. Today, night is expressed in art by the traditional ways and through man-made technological developments of art techniques that have become popular. Topics in night-themed art vary in accordance with art movements’ ideals and expression characteristics of the time period, but the basic elements of night have always remained the same. These include for example the moon, stars and usually black or dark blue color described in the darkness. Popular topics in night-themed works of art have always been e.g. religion, myths, history, death and politics. In recent years increased interest in the night indicates that it is no longer sufficient for people to trust only the facts to solve the riddle of life and death. It is observed that beyond the visible reality is located another more wonderful world, the kingdom of the night.
