Ekologia esitystaiteessa

Abstract

Opinnäytetyö käsittelee esitystaiteen ekologiaa esitystaiteilijan sekä esitystaiteen katsoja-kokijan näkökulmasta. Esitystaiteen mahdollisuuksia taiteenlajina hahmotellaan lähdekirjallisuuden avulla, osin suhteessa perinteiseen teatteritaiteeseen. Opinnäytteen keskeisin kysymys liittyy toisin olemiseen. Minkälaisia mahdollisuuksia esitystaide tarjoaa arkisen olemisen tavan laajentamiseen tai totutun ympäristön toisin näkemiseen ja kokemiseen? Minkälainen on tai voi olla esitystaiteen suhde katsojaan? Entä taiteilijan suhde esityksen rakentamiseen? Ekologisuuden käsite on lainattu ranskalaisen filosofi Felix Guattarin ajattelusta. Guattarin ajatuksia sekä niiden yhteneväisyyttä esitystaiteeseen esitellään luvussa kolme.

Opinnäytetyö alkaa taiteen funktion muutoksen hahmottelemisella sen tunnetusta historiasta nykypäivään. Tämän jälkeen syvennytään esitystaiteen erityispiirteisiin ja paikkaan Suomessa. Ekologisuuden käsitteen esittelemisen jälkeen paneudutaan esitystaiteen ekologian käytännölliseen toteutumiseen kolmesta eri näkökulmasta: esiintyjän oleminen, esitysprosessin orgaanisuus ja esityksen muodon mahdollisuudet. Nämä alaluvut sisältävät sekä teosesimerkkejä että harjoitusmateriaaleja. Viimeisessä luvussa pohditaan ekologisuuden toteutumista Toukokuu-kollektiivin valmistamassa esitystaideteoksessa Itkijänaiset.

Opinnäytteen tarkoituksena on pyrkiä syventämään tietoisuutta esitystaiteen erityisyydestä ja sen mahdollisuuksista taiteenlajina. Samalla opinnäyte vastaa kysymykseen taiteen tarpeellisuudesta ja paikasta tässä ajassa. Opinnäytteen voi tulkita myös hienoviritteiseksi manifestiksi toisin olemisen puolesta.

The thesis discusses the ecology in performance art, from the perspective of the performance artist as well as the viewer-experiencer. With the help of the reference material the possibilities of performance art are outlined, partly in relation to the traditional theater art. The essential research problem in the thesis relates to being otherwise. Namely, what kind of opportunities performance art provides to extend the everyday way of being, seeing and experiencing the familiar environment? What is or can be the relationship between performance art and the viewer? What about an artist’s relation to the construction of a performance? The term ecology is from French philosopher Felix Guattari. Guattari’s thoughts and their coherence to performance art are introduced in chapter three.

The thesis begins with discussion about the change of the function of art from its well know history to the present time. Thereafter, the focus is on the specific characteristics of performance art and its position in Finland. After the introduction, I delve into the implementation of the ecology in performance art form three different perspectives: the level of acting, the organic process of a performance and the possibilities of the form of performance. These subsections contain examples of performances and training material I have seen and experienced. Finally, in the last chapter I present my own performance called Itkijänaiset (Crying Ladies) and sort the ecology in it.

The purpose of the thesis is to deepen the awareness of the performance art, its specificity and possibilities as an art form. At the same time the thesis concludes with the question of the necessity and the place of art in present time. The thesis can also be seen as delicate manifesto in favor of being otherwise.
