Tiivistelmä
The importance of meeting place Kiesi to the well-being of visitors
We will do our best to preserve this place!

The study was commissioned by the meeting place Kiesi. Kiesi is a low-threshold meeting place for working-aged people in Kaarina. The aim of the thesis was to study the effect of the activities on the well - being and mental health of the visitors. The importance of community and inclusion in the meeting place was also explored. The knowledge base was well-being, mental health, community, inclusion, and exclusion. The study was qualitative and was conducted as individual interviews at a meeting place in Kiesi in January 2022. Participation in the interviews was voluntary.

The interviews were divided into four different themes, which were experience of the activity and the importance of the activity for well-being, community, inclusion, and development suggestions. The meeting place had brought many visitors to life in books and the rhythm of everyday life, the creation and maintenance of interpersonal relationships had also been successful in Kiesi, and a sense of inclusion had been achieved.

Visitors to Kiesi participated in the study and were 40–68-year-olds. There was a total of 11 interviewees, six were men and the rest were women. The interviewees had been in chess for 1–24 years. Most of the visitors visited Kiesi regularly. The backgrounds of the interviewees were not asked separately. The interviewees had, among other things, substance abuse and mental health problems, gambling addictions and criminal background.

In summary, Kiesi became very important as a place to get peer support and talk about your problems and worries. The results of the research received a lot of social support. The mental emphasis is on the support and interaction provided by the mentors and the encouragement of activity. Interviewees also said Kiesi brought their lives and rhythm and increased self-confidence. Overall, Kiesi has been perceived as a place that is easily accessible and open to everyone. Based on the study, an important part of low-threshold services is substance abuse and mental health services
