The objective of this thesis was current state analysis and development of specification review process focusing on subcontracting. The case organization of this thesis is a company that operates in the semiconductor industry and manufactures customized products for customer needs in Finland and in subcontracting. The purpose of this thesis was to investigate and analyze the current state of the process and to create development proposals that answer the question of what should be developed in the process and thus enables further development of the process.
The thesis was carried out as qualitative research. The data was collected utilizing the case organization’s internal documents and through theme interviews by interviewing internal and external stakeholders involved in the process.
In the current state analysis based on the collected data, a current state process diagram was created, and the weaknesses and development areas of the process were identified. The weaknesses were divided into three main themes, which included data management, requirements management, and performance.
Based on the key findings of the current state analysis, a literature review was conducted on relevant topics to support the creation of well-structured development proposals. The literature review covers the following topics: process development, lean and its methods, measuring the performance of processes and business information management. The development proposals focused on the three themes identified in the current state analysis.
The thesis achieved its objective. The outcome of this thesis was a current state process flow diagram and development proposals that can be used to improve data management and smoothness of the specification review process. The thesis provided the case organization a clear picture of the current state of the process, its weaknesses, and its development opportunities.
