Kyse ei ole vain eläimestä tai ihmisestä

Abstract

Tässä kirjallisessa osuudessa tutkitaan ihmisen ja eläinten, varsinkin nauta-karjan, välistä vuorovaikutusta, sekä pohditaan määrittääkö mahdollisesti myös jokin kolmas osapuoli tuota suhdetta. Mikä on rahan vaikutus eläinoikeuksiin ja missä menee eettisyyden raja?

Kuva-aiheeksi on otettu vasikka, koska nautakarjan käyttö myös uskonnossa ja tuotantotaloudessa on merkittävä läpi ihmisen historian. Se on palvonnankohde ja ruokateollisuuden mahdollistaja. Vasikassa on uskonto ja raha yhdessä kokonaisuudessa.

Teoksen toteuttamiseen välineiksi on valittu vesivärit, koska niiden tarjoama herkkyys suhteessa asian vakavuuteen on äärimmäisen ristiriitainen yhdis-tettynä installaation muuhun rakennelmiin. Työ on kiinnitetty ripustimilla metallikehikkoon ja kehikossa on taso, jonka päällä on tuttipulloja. Ne kuvastavat kokonaistilanteen absurdia asetelmaa, sillä vasikoiden ”pentutehtailu” on meijeriteollisuuden kivijalka.

Pyrkimyksenä on myös lisätä tietoisuutta muun muassa maitotuotannon toimintaperiaatteesta taiteen keinoin.

The purpose of this study is to examine the interaction between humans and cattle, and open eyes about the economic viewpoints in that relationship. What is the effect of the stock markets on animal rights and where are the ethical boundaries. The information was gathered from literature, newspapers, the Internet and from years of personal experience.

The main piece of the installation is a watercolor painting of a calf. It is attached to a custom metal frame that includes a ledge. Upon the ledge are a series of baby bottles, appearing just below the calves face. The entire installation is suspended from the ceiling from two meat hooks. This piece represents the absurdity of our dairy industry. Without calves, the blind consumer would not have milk. Hopefully inspiring the viewer to consider the origin of their food and the creature that produced it.

The final result of this thesis was putting activism in an artistic context is a way to bring awareness in front of a different audience. Animal rights is an issue that humans must accept and reform their own lives.
