The purpose of this thesis was to find out what kind of support people with neuropsychiatric problems and mental health challenges have received during school and what kind of support they would have needed. The thesis was commissioned by the TUKEE2-project, the aim of which was to actively involve young people in the development of services with the help of the thesis. The long-term goal of the project was to prevent the exclusion of young people and increase inclusion.
Interviews conducted by the TUKEE2-project were used as material in the thesis, which were carried out as semi-structured theme interviews. There were a total of 10 interviews. The material of the interviews was analyzed by thematization, after which a summary of the emerging themes was compiled from the material.
3 main themes emerged from the interviews, which were focused on in the results section of this thesis. The results concerned challenges related to learning, social relationships and problems related to them, as well as stress sensitivity and variability of functioning ability.
Based on the results, all the interviewees had some kind of problems related to learning and almost all of them were of the opinion that these problems had an impact on how well they did in their studies. Many of the interviewees felt that the support measures received at school were insufficient for them. According to the results, sociability divided the interviewees in two, because some said they spent time with friends and some said they wanted to spend time alone. According to the interviewees, better knowledge of neuropsychiatric and mental health problems would have helped to better understand different social situations by adults at school. The results also revealed that most of the interviewees are not currently working. The reasons for this varied widely.
