Ryijyn uusi tila : seinältä keholle

Abstract

Opinnäytetyössä käsiteltiin suomalaisen modernin ryijytaiteen soveltamista nykytaiteeseen. Aihe valittiin kiinnostuksesta tekniikkaan ja materiaaliin sekä arvostuksesta kädentaitoihin, jotka siirtyvät sukupolvelta toiselle. Teoreettisessa osuudessa tutkittiin ryijyn perinnettä, käsinompelutekniikkaa ja ryijytaiteen kehittymistä 1900-luvulla, sekä tutustuttiin taideryijyjen visuaalisiin piirteisiin.

Taiteellisen työskentelyn tavoitteena oli häivyttää käsityön ja nykytaiteen rajoja yhdistämällä ryijytekniikka ja korutaide. Teosten teemaksi valittiin kaksi sääilmiötä, jotka tuntuvat ihmiskehossa. Materiaaleiksi valittiin pellava, villa, puuvilla ja hopea. Menetelminä käytettiin perinteistä käsinompelua, koneompelua ja metallintyöstötekniikoita. Aiemmin hankittu materiaalituntemus oli merkittävässä roolissa.

Intuitiivisesti edenneestä työprosessista syntyi kaksi ylävartalolle ripustettavaa teosta. Kylmyyden halaus on inspiroitunut kylmästä tuulesta ja Harmauden tuntu räntäsateesta. Materiaalien valinta ja käyttötapa tukevat taiteellista teemaa. Teokset laajentavat ryijyn käsitettä, sillä niiden olotila on staattisen sijaan liikkuva ja katseltavan sijaan ihoa koskettava.

Prosessin kautta löytyi oma ompelutekniikka ja ilmaisutyyli, joka koetaan omaksi. Tekniikan varioiminen eri materiaaleja käyttämällä mahdollistaa uuden tavan käsitellä käsityön ja nykytaiteen suhdetta.

The thesis dealt with the application of Finnish modern rya art to contemporary art. The theme was chosen out of an interest in technique and materials and an appreciation for craftsmanship that is passed on from generation to generation. In the theoretical part, the tradition of ryas, hand sewing technique and the development of rya art in the 20th century were explored, as well as the visual features of the rya art.

The aim of the artistic part was to blur the boundaries between craftsmanship and contemporary art by combining rya sewing technique and jewellery art. Two weather phenomena that are felt in the human body were chosen as the theme of the art pieces. Linen, wool, cotton, and silver were selected as materials. Traditional hand sewing, machine sewing, and metalworking techniques were used. Previous knowledge of the materials played a significant role.

This intuitive process led to the creation of two upper body artworks. The Embrace of the Cold is inspired by the cold wind and The Feel of the Grey by the sleet. The choice of materials and the way they are used support the artistic theme. The art pieces extend the concept of rya, as their state of being is moving rather than static, and touching the body rather than being seen only.

Through the process, a new sewing technique and a style of expression were found. Variation of technique through the use of different materials allows a new way of approaching the relationship between craftsmanship and contemporary art.
