Eläintenpitäjärekisterin käytettävyyden arviointi

Abstract

Opinnäytetyössä pyritään selvittämään eläintenpitäjien ja eläinten pitopaikkojen tallennukseen tarkoitetun Eläintenpitäjärekisteri -nimisen sovelluksen käytössä esiintyvät ongelmakohdat sekä tuottamaan ehdotukset niiden ratkaisemiseksi. Saatua palautetta ja kehittämisehdotuksia on tarkoitus hyödyntää sovelluksen kehitystyössä.

Tavoitteena oli tutkia sovelluksen opittavuutta, tehokkuutta ja muistettavuutta. Lisäksi haluttiin selvittää olisiko sähköisen asioinnin avauksella vaikusta datan laatuun. Opinnäytetyön teoreettisessa osuudessa tarkastellaan käytettävyyteen liittyviä seikkoja. Sovelluksen käytettävyyttä tutkittiin käytettävyystestauksen avulla. Viisi sovelluksen todellista käyttäjää suoritti käytettävyystestin ja lopuksi heitä haastateltiin. Haastattelumenetelmänä käytettiin teemahaastattelua. Käytettävyystestauksen avulla pyrittiin löytämään ongelmat, joita kokemattomat ja kokeneet käyttäjät kohtaavat Eläintenpitäjärekisteriä käyttäessään.

Suurin osa sovelluksen käytettävyysongelmista liittyy tehokkuuteen. Tehokkuusongelmat ilmenivät runsaana navigointina eri ikkunoiden ja välilehtien välillä sekä saman tiedon toistuvana syöttämisenä. Käyttäjiltä jäi helposti huomaamatta jonkin puuttuvan tiedon lisäys tai he joutuivat etsimään tiedon oikeaa tallennuspaikkaa. Käyttäjille vieraat ja epäselvät termit aiheuttivat opittavuus- ja muistettavuusongelmia. Ongelmia havaittiin myös rekisteröitymisprosessissa. Rekisteröitymislomakkeita pidettiin vaikeaselkoisina ja ne palautettiin usein puutteellisesti täytettyinä. Lisäksi koordinaatit, eläintenpidon lopettaminen ja keskeyttäminen jäivät usein ilmoittamatta.

Kehittämisehdotuksissa on pyritty parantamaan sovelluksen käytettävyyttä vähentämällä välilehtien määrää, sijoittamalla pakolliset tiedot lähelle toisiaan ja esitäyttämällä tietoja. Lisäksi käytettyjä termejä on muutettu käyttäjälle ymmärrettävämpään muotoon ja niiden käyttöä on yhdenmukaistettu. Tutkimuksen perusteella sähköisen asioinnin avaus eläintenpitäjille oletettavasti parantaa datan laatua ja vähentää viranomaisten selvitystyötä. Edellytyksenä on, että eläintenpitäjille suunnatun käyttöliittymän tulee olla helppokäyttöinen ja käyttäjäänsä opastava.

The purpose of the thesis is to discover the problems of the Eläintenpitäjärekisteri application, which is designed to hold information on animal keepers and places where animals are held, and to create solutions to the problems. The received feedback and development suggestions are to be used for developing the application.

The aim was to research learnability, efficiency and memorability of the application. The aim was to also find out whether opening of the website would affect the quality of the data. The theoretical section of the thesis concentrates on usability issues. The usability of the application was researched with a usability test. Five application users performed a usability test and were interviewed afterwards. The interview method used was theme interview. The usability testing aimed to find the problems which inexperienced and experienced users face when using the register.

Most of the application user problems were to do with efficiency. Efficiency issues could be seen as excessive navigation between windows and tabs, and as repetition of the same information. Users commonly failed to notice when missing information needed to be filled or they had to search for correct location for the information. The terms which were unfamiliar or unclear to the users caused problems with learning and memorability. Problems were also discovered in the registering process. Registration forms were considered unclear and they were often returned incomplete. Additionally, the coordinates, ceasing to keep animals and temporary breaks in operation were rarely reported.

Development suggestions are aimed at improving the usability of the application by reducing the number of tabs, by placing the mandatory information brackets close to each other and by prefilling the information. Additionally, the terms were also changed for clearer alternatives and the terminology was standardized. Based on the research, opening the website for animal keepers would noticeably improve the quality of data and reduce investigation work for the officials. The prerequisite is that the user interface for animal keepers is easy to use and educational to the users.
