Tapaustutkimus IT -projektien haasteista ja ongelmista

Abstract

Projekti on joukko ihmisiä ja muita resursseja, jotka on tilapäisesti koottu yhteen suorittamaan tiettyä tehtävää. Projekti on luonteeltaan ainutkertainen. Projektilla on aina selkeä alku ja loppu. Projektityöskentelyn haasteita ja ongelmia on tutkittu jo vuosien ajan ja niistä on kirjoitettu useita erilaisia teoksia. Useimmiten tutkimukset ja niiden näkökulmat rajoittuvat projektijohtoon. Tutkimuksista puuttuvat lähes aina asiantuntijoiden tai tekijöiden näkökulmat.

Opinnäytetyö suoritettiin tapaustutkimuksena Yritys X:n projektityöskentelyn haasteista ja ongelmista. Yritys X on merkittävä IT-palvelutalo, joka perustettiin 2000 -luvun alussa. Yritys X tarjoaa niin ulkoistuspalveluita, kuin myös sovelluskehitystä. Tämän opinnäyte-työn tavoitteena on tutkia ulkoistuspalveluita toteuttavan organisaation ongelmia ja haasteita projektityöstelyssä. Opinnäytetyön rajauksen ulkopuolelle jää esim. sovelluskehityksen organisaatio. Opinnäytetyötä varten tutkittiin projektityöskentelyn parhaita käytäntöjä alan kirjallisuudesta. Empiiriseen osuuteen poimittiin parhaimmat käytännöt, jotka soveltuvat tai koskevat erityisesti IT-toimitusprojekteja.

Tutkimus Yritys X:n haasteista ja ongelmista projektityöskentelyssä suoritettiin sähköisellä kyselylomakkeella, joka lähetettiin kaikille projektityöskentelyssä mukana oleville projektipäälliköille ja asiantuntijoille. Kyselyn tuloksista käy ilmi, että ongelmia ja haasteita esiintyy lähes jokaisessa projektin osa-alueella. Haasteita ja ongelmia koetaan mm. projektin viestinnässä, ohjauksessa, raportoinnissa ja aikatauluissa. Merkittävimmät ongelmat liittyvät henkilöiden resursointiin ja projektiaikataulujen venymiseen.

Tulosten pohjalta Yritys X:lle suositellaan, että resursointimallia kehitetään toimivammaksi, projektin viestintää varten kehitetään tehokas viestintäsuunnitelma sekä koulutetaan asiantuntijoille projektityöskentelyn perusteet.

A project is a group of people and other resources that are put together for a mutual task. Projects are always unique and they have a clear start and ending. Over the years many researches and studies have been conducted about the problems and challenges when working in projects. Almost all researches focus on the project management’s point of view. Majority of the researches lack point of view of the people actually im-plementing the project.

The thesis was conducted as a case study of company X’s project activity. Company X was founded at the beginning of the 20th century and today is a major IT service deliv-ery company. Company X offers services in outsourcing and software management. The objective of this thesis was to research occurring problems and difficulties with the company’s outsourcing organization’s project work. The software management organi-zation is not be included in this thesis. Best practices in project working was researched for the thesis. The empirical part includes the best solutions and findings that suit an IT delivery project.

The study of challenges and problems in the project working of Company X was con-ducted with an online survey. The survey was sent to all experts and project managers that are on daily basis working with projects. The results indicate that there are challeng-es and problems in almost every aspect of the company’s project working. Challenges and problems are experienced in project communication, reporting and scheduling. The biggest problems are in project resourcing and exceeded project schedules.

On the basis of the results the Company is recommended to develop a better project resourcing model, a better project communication plan and to train experts with basic knowledge of working with projects.
