Improvement of maritime education in Namibia

Abstract

The purpose of the study was about the maritime training education in Namibia, its challenges, possible ways of improvement, and ways how to help the country to be IMO compliant and enable its seafarers to work anywhere around the globe without any limitations.

Throughout this thesis, the author will be seeking ways how to better train Namibian seafarers by using Finland as a reference country. To make Namibian seafarers gain competency that will enable them unlimited work placement globally. This thesis used a case study method and a qualitative research approach. Interviews and discussions with NAMFI students were conducted and information was gathered for the case study.

From the findings of the research, it was concluded that the Directorate of Maritime Affairs in Namibia was one of the major reasons why Namibian seafarers are lagging in terms of receiving maritime education that is internationally recognized. Possible solutions and recommendations were further discussed as to how to improve maritime training in Namibia.
