Ammattikorkeakouluopiskelijoiden näkemyksiä omaishoidosta

Abstract

Opinnäytetyön tarkoituksena oli selvittää ammattikorkeakouluopiskelijoiden näkemyksistä omaishoidosta. Tavoitteena oli saada näkyvyyttä omaishoidosta tutkimustuloksien kautta. Opinnäytetyön tilaajana toimi Satakunnan Omaishoitajat ry.

Omaishoito tarkoittaa vanhuksen, vammaisen tai sairaan henkilön hoitamista omaisen tai muun läheisen henkilön avulla. Suomessa omaishoitajia on noin 50 000, joista suurin osa on naisia. Omaishoidon yleisin syy on muistisairaudet. Hyvinvointialueen kanssa omaishoitosopimuksen tehnyttä henkilöä kutsutaan omaishoitajaksi. Omaishoitaja voi olla hoidettavan omainen tai muu läheinen henkilö.

Opinnäytetyössä haettiin vastausta kahteen tutkimuskysymykseen: minkälaisia näkemyksiä ammattikorkeakouluopiskelijoilla on omaishoidosta ja miten ammattikorkeakouluopiskelijoiden mukaan saataisiin lisää näkyvyyttä omaishoitoon. Opinnäytetyössä käytettiin laadullista tutkimusmenetelmää. Aineistonkeruu toteutettiin yksilöhaastatteluina (n=5), joissa käytiin läpi kuusi pääkysymystä apukysymyksineen. Haastattelut suoritettiin vuoden 2024 alussa. Tutkimuksen tuloksien muodostamisessa käytettiin aineistolähtöistä sisällönanalyysia.

Tutkimustuloksissa ammattikorkeakouluopiskelijoiden näkemyksistä muodostui kolme yläkategoriaa: tiedolliset, yhteiskunnalliset ja sosiaaliset tekijät. Tiedollisista tekijöistä nousi esiin yhdistysten jakama tieto ja koulutukset sekä ammattiopinnot. Yhteiskunnallisia tekijöitä olivat omaishoidon huono arvostus, omaishoidon korvaus ja aiheen käsittely negatiivisesti mediassa. Sosiaalisista tekijöistä korostuivat vastaajien hyvät tai huonot kokemukset omaishoidosta, kokemattomuus ja mielikuvat/stereotypiat omaishoidosta.

Ammattikorkeakouluopiskelijoiden näkemysten mukaan omaishoito on tärkeää, mutta vaativaa. Vastaajien mukaan omaishoito näkyy vanhustenhuollossa, mutta yleisellä tasolla sen näkyvyys on huonoa. Heidän ajatuksiaan omaishoidon näkyvyyden lisäämiseksi olivat koulutusten lisääminen, someartikkelien julkaiseminen ja omaishoitoyhdistysten jakama tieto nettisivujen kautta.

Jatkotutkimusehdotuksena voisi toteuttaa laajan tutkimuksen ammattikorkeakouluopiskelijoiden ja muiden nuorten hoivaajien kaltaisessa tilanteessa olevien henkilöiden näkemyksistä ja kokemuksista omaishoidosta.

The purpose of the thesis was to find out about the views on informal care from the students at University of Applied Sciences. The aim of the thesis was to increase visibility of informal care through the research results. The subscriber of the thesis was Satakunnan Omaishoitajat ry.

Home nursing means caring for an elder, a disabled or an ill person by a relative or other close person. There are approximately 50 000 caregivers in Finland, most of whom are women. A person who made a contract for informal care with the wellbeing services county is called a caregiver. A caregiver can be a relative or other close person of the person being cared for. The thesis sought answers to two research questions: what kind of views university of applied sciences students have about informal care and according to university of applied sciences students, how to get more visibility for informal care.

In the thesis was used a qualitative research method. The data collection was carried out as individual interviews (n=5), where six main questions and auxiliary questions were reviewed. The interviews were conducted at the beginning of 2024. Material-based content analysis was used to create the results of the study.

In the research results, three upper categories were formed from the views of students at University of Applied Sciences. The categories were the informational factors, community factors and social factors. Social factors highlighted the respondent’s good or bad experiences with informal care, inexperience, and mental images/stereotypes of informal care. The knowledge and training provided by the associations, as well professional studies, emerged from the informational factors. Community factors included poor appreciation for informal care, compensation for informal care and negative media coverage of the topic.

The views of the students at University of Applied Sciences on informal care were that it is important but demanding. According to the students informal care is visible in care for the elderly, but on general level its visibility is poor. Their ideas for increasing the visibility of informal care were to increase education, publish social media articles and share information through the website of informal care associations.

As a further research proposal, an extensive study could be carried out on the views and experiences of other students at University of Applied sciences and other young caregivers.
