This thesis is executed on the request of Head Recycle System who was the commissioner of this research.
EU has set a target that 70 % of all demolition and construction waste should be recycled by the summer 2020 and this forces construction companies to take actions towards better waste maintenance. This thesis concentrates on plastic recycling in construction yards, the main purpose of this research was to report the current situation on plastic waste recycling in construction yards, what factors hinder the recycling process and how could the recycling be improved.
Theory of this thesis is based on knowledge of current waste maintenance and legislation inside Finland and EU. Recycling in common and plastic recycling formulates important part of the knowledge base. The information for the research has been collected from published books and electronic publications. As a research method, qualitative research method was used of which open telephone interviews conformed.
Research included two telephone interviews which were conducted to construction companies who operate nationwide in Finland, case company A and B. Interviews were hold as telephone interviews due prevailing Corona situation and both interviewees were experts on waste management in their companies.
Interviews relived that plastic recycling and recycling in common in construction yards was not currently been paid as much attention as it should have been. Prevailing negative attitude against recycling created an atmosphere in which part of the construction yards took care of the recycling and others did not depending on foremen of the construction yard. Further education and enlightenment into recycling's practices and importance would solve part of the problem, also waste handling and storing in construction yards should be improved with better equipment which are suitable in small and crowded spaces and would not lift the waste fees substantially.
