Tiivistelmä
The Police and the Public (Vol. 1) seizes some of the opportunities for further scholarly research provided by the renewed Police Barometer Survey (PBS) project. From the PBS 2022 sweep on, the survey is based on random sampling methodology. The sample has been drawn from the database of the Digital and Population Data Services Agency of Finland, and prepared for the analysis by Statistics Finland. The data have exceptionally robust statistical grounds.
The three essays of the book provide unique, new perspectives to 1. Resource shortages of the police, of which the respondents of the PBS appear to be very concerned; 2. Crimes that go unreported due to fear of reprisal, and; 3. Witness intimidation; a phenomenon that threatens not only the individual witness and her or his rights, but the entire polity: the law, the rule of law, and the constitution of liberal democracy itself.
The articles of the book offer valuable reading to scholars and students in the fields of police studies and criminology, and to policy analysts of the police.
