Tiivistelmä
The concept of Augmented Reality (AR) is to integrate computer-generated data into the human view of the real world. I selected the topic AR technology support for IB officers, because it is an innovative and captivating subject. In Icebreaking the OOW is struggling with a lot of data available. To integrate data procurable, the IB officer is forced to turn head down. This is known as head down time. When all the data are shown in the head mounted display or head up display, the OOW can keep the observation on the outside view and on the assisted vessels and still can have all the data in front of the eyes.

In this thesis I will go through the theory of AR technology. The empirical part of the thesis includes the designing of concepts to Icebreaking POI system and AR Ui concept panes for assistance and convoy, which aim to endorse IB officers by enhancing oversight and safety when assisting vessels in ice. Concepts are contrived based on the observations and discussions with experienced IB officers on the winter Baltics.

The advantages are that AR can make data better accessible in icebreakers, and it can give more perspective as compared to ECDIS and radar. Showing data in AR can reduce HDT and increase IB officers’ movability that could enhance officers’ situation awareness and safety. Since the demanding context and assistance at icebreaking, I´m proposing that icebreaking AR systems need to be designed and developed in close connection with the AR developers. A frequent testing procedure could be founded on combining tests in simulators and trials at winter baltics.
