The path to a meaningful and well-rounded life, whether through a successful career or rich experiences, can often be attributed to high quality early education. International research confirmed both the importance and effectiveness of early childhood education and care. The research also concluded that “…determining factors of providing quality Early Childhood Education is the “quality” of the workforce”.
This study reviewed and compared the development of early childhood education and care in Japan and Finland. Characteristics, license requirements and teacher education and training were analysed to better understand the current status of early childhood education and care in a wider context. The findings were then examined and presented to the Principal of Nishikigaoka Hoikuen, where the author has been employed for the past ten years. The aim of the study was to construct an in-house training framework to advance the teachers’ competences, ultimately leading to providing higher quality early childhood education and care at Nisikigaoka Hoikuen.
