Ääniä päässä : kuunteleminen, fiktioelokuvan ääni-ilmaisu ja psykoakustiikka

Abstract

Tämä opinnäytetyö käsittelee elokuvan kerrontaa äänisuunnittelun näkökulmasta sekä psykoakustisten ilmiöiden hyödyntämisen kautta. Suurin osa psykoakustiikkaa käsittelevästä kirjallisuudesta tarkastelee ilmiöitä puhtaasti fysiikan näkökulmista, kun taas tässä tutkielmassa pyritään ottamaan lähestymiskulmaksi enemmän taiteellis-tekninen tapa.

Tutkimuksen tarkoitus oli selventää ja syventää tekijänsä ymmärrystä elokuvaäänestä sekä psykoakustiikan ilmiöistä. Äänen puolella suuri osa tiedosta on nk. "hiljaista tietoa", joka tiedostetaan, mutta josta ei juurikaan ääneen puhuta. Työn tavoite oli selkeyttää ja jakaa kirjallisesti asioita kotimaisella kielellä niin, että niistä olisi hyötyä myös muille äänen parissa työskenteleville.

Työ käy ensin lävitse ihmiskuulon perusteet, etenee siitä äänellisen elokuvakerronnan lainalaisuuksiin ja päätyy lopulta käsittelemään äänen suhdetta ihmisen psykologiaan. Lopuksi käydään vielä lävitse joitain mahdollisia käytännön sovellutuksia työssä esitetyille ilmiöille.

This thesis investigates film narrative via the use of sound design and psychoacoustic phenomena. Most of the literary sources about psychoacoustics tend to approach the topic only from a purely physical viewpoint, whereas in this thesis the main objective was to examine the subject from an artistic and technical stance.

The purpose of the study was to clarify and broaden the author's understanding of film sound design and psychoacoustic phenomena. In the field of sound, there is a lot of tacit knowledge – it is widely acknowledged but not openly discussed for various reasons. The objective of the work was to elucidate and share some of this knowledge in a written form and in the Finnish language, so that others working in the field of sound could also benefit from it.

The thesis starts from the fundamentals of human hearing, covers the rules of audio narrative in film and discusses the relationship between sound and human psychology. Finally, the thesis introduces some practical examples of the phenomena presented.
