Telemedicine is emerging as an effective tool in modern healthcare technology for the treatment of chronic diseases over the distant. It has shown great benefits for chronic conditions such as diabetes, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hypertension etc. It has shown positive outcomes in patients with chronic health conditions by continuous monitoring, encouraging self-management, engagement and adherence. The purpose of this thesis is to explore the impact of telemedicine in the care and management of patients with chronic diseases.
A scoping review was chosen for this master’s thesis. A literature search was performed using search keywords as per the search strategy in the databases. Science direct, Taylor and Francis, EBSCOhost and Google scholar were used for data search. Research question was determined using PICO method. The total of 18 articles were used for this review. The data was analysed using inductive content analysis. Further, for the data quality assessment the critical appraisal checklists of the Joanna Briggs Institute were used.
Telemedicine is already changing how chronic diseases are managed, but its future holds even greater potential. Findings of this review show that telemedicine has a strong positive impact on chronic disease management where continuous care and monitoring are requiring and crucial. Remote monitoring, access to health equity, improved disease management, treatment adherence and patient satisfaction are some of the positive outcome of telemedicine.
The identified challenges as per this master's thesis are technical, financial, and regulatory issues that need attention for telemedicine to work. Issues relating to Internet connectivity and usability were particularly significant to the rural and elderly populations for the better outcome.
