In recent years, despite advances in water treatment technology, water pollution remains a globalcrisis, with more and more substances containing organic compounds and other non-biodegradable substances being discharged into the water as a result of industrialization and thus affecting human health. This review outlines the intensity changes in the adsorption capacity of activated carbon for different classes of pollutants as a result of its pore structure and surface chemistry alteration after acid and alkali modification. The review reveals the potential of activated carbon for treating sewage, which provides a pathway to more efficient and environmentally friendly wastewater treatment
