Största tyngdpunkten ligger på böckerna The Visual Story: Seeing the structure of Film, TV, and New Media av Bruce Block och Picture composition for film and television av Peter Ward.
The headline of my degree thesis is “Visual similarities and disparities in the closed room of horror films”. The work is a qualitative content analysis of horror films from different decades. The main focus is on the closed room in the horror films, but my research also discusses other visual aesthetics and the monster itself in the horror movies. The goal of my thesis is to investigate visual similarities and disparities in horror films’ closed room. The purpose is to gain a larger understanding of how to build and create horror in film using visual means.
My research questions are as follows:
Which similarities and disparities can I find in three horror films from different decades? Do the horror films have a common visual storytelling?
Has the visual storytelling in horror films changed through the decades?
The movies I’ve chosen are Psycho (1960) by Alfred Hitchcock, The Shining (1980) by Stanley Kubrick and The Others (2001) by Alejandro Amenábar. I’ve chosen the movies based on that the closed room is a building. I don’t analyse the movies as a whole, but limit the work by choosing out two sequences from each movie. The first sequence that I’ve chosen is the presentation of the terrifying. The second sequence that I’ve chosen includes the climax of the films. In a purpose of only focusing on the visuals I have left out the sound, so I have analysed the sequences without having sounds turned on. Besides the movies, I base my thesis on articles and books that handle visual elements in film.
The main focus is on the books The Visual Story: Seeing the structure of Film, TV, and New Media by Bruce Block and Picture composition for film and television by Peter Ward. In my results I discovered that the closed room in the films I have chosen have yet another common trait; they are located in remote places that can’t be reached by just any person. Also all of the films handle a so called “inner psychological monster”. In The
Shining and The Others I found concrete jump scares, and I noticed they were made in a similar way. I also found out that a key element in the movies are mirrors and reflections, and that they serve a similar purpose. I found it easier to make parallels between The Shining and The Others because of the use of a steadicam in both films. All of the movies I have chosen were very different and unique, but I still managed to find common traits in them. I think it’s partly because the films are what I classify as analog films because they don’t have any special effects that nowadays can be seen in many films. It was also interesting to notice how much the camera technique can affect the visual storytelling in horror films.
