The DSLR with movie function effect has had a greater impact on the film business than anyone anticipated when they came in late 2008, and they have been widely used in the industry since. The purpose of this thesis is to examine how well a DSLR camera functions as a digital movie camera and compares it with other more expensive professional digital video cameras. A limitation has been made to a single DSLR, which represents all other DSLRs with movie function available on the market. The thesis explaines the technology behind the cameras, listing their pros and cons, technical comparison with other cameras and suggestions for improvement. The main source for this work is a documentary series about the SCCE, Single Chip Camera Evaluation, conducted by Zacuto. The series shows all tests in image quality performed by SCCE and the thesis has chosen three cameras from this test and compared them with each other. The three cameras are the Canon 5D Mark II, the Sony PMW-F3 and the Arri Alexa. In addition to the results from these tests the thesis also compared the cameras specifications. At the end of the thesis different solutions are presented that can be applied to make the DSLRs better tools for filmmakers. The result of this work is that DSLR cameras do not perform as good as their more expensive competitors in the comparison, but with the right equipment and workflow they can be a very powerful tool for filmmakers. Other important sources in the thesis are "The DSLR Cinematography Guide" by Ryan Koo and "Crafting the film look with video" by Kurt Lancaster.
