Depression is called the national disease of our time. Nowadays many young individuals suffer from depression which is a problem for the individual as well as the society. It is important that the teenagers get help as early as possible and that the help they get is as effective as possible. Young individuals themselves are experts in what kind of help and service they need and that is why the purpose of this study is to gain knowledge about young people´s experiences, opinions and thoughts about counseling with a professional as a support, help and treatment for depression. My research questions are the following: 1. What prevent or encourage a young individual to make use of counseling? 2. What significance does counseling with a professional have for the young individual that suffers from depression? and 3. What are the factors that make the meeting with the professional appreciated, valuable and effective for the young individual with depression? Definitions of children, youth and depression are explained in the background. There is also an explanation about the diagnosis and causes of depression. Furthermore I look at depression in a historic and societal perspective. Theories presented in this study are the following: counseling, social pedagogy and empowerment. The method for this study is a literature review and the material consists of ten scientific articles collected from databases. The result of this study shows that young people that have used counseling as a treatment for their depression liked it and thought it was an effective method that helped them in their life situation. The result also shows that youth put more value in the relationship with the professional than in the conversation itself. The young individuals that have not tried counseling are sceptic about starting to use it. Causes to their doubt are primarily that the young people do not have enough knowledge about the process of counseling and that they are afraid of other people’s attitudes of persons that make use of counseling.
