An application was developed at the Research- and Development Institute Aronia to create a simple, systematic way of calculating carbon budgets for different ecosystems on municipal level. With the LUONNIKAS calculation tool, municipalities can easily produce an estimate of the natural environments’ role in a municipal level carbon budget and use this information in their climate work. The LUONNIKAS calculation tool consists of simplified calculation methods in order to make it easy to use and to ensure that data needed for the calculations is easily available at the municipal level. The tool is intended as a complement to the KASVENER calculation model, which is a model for calculating anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions on the municipal level.
LUONNIKAS calculates the carbon budget for a one year time period. In addition to carbon gases (CO2 and CH4), calculation also includes nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from forest fertilization. Final results are presented as CO2 equivalents.
The calculation methods for the carbon budgets of forests, peat extraction sites and croplands on organic soils follow the methodology used in Finland’s national inventory of greenhouse gases. For other parts the calculation methods are based on published research. The calculations were developed in cooperation with experts in the fields of national emission inventory calculations and ecosystems’ carbon dynamics.
The calculations are based on many estimates and average values. Therefore, LUONNIKAS only gives a rough estimate of the carbon budgets. These estimates are used because on municipal level there are often no resources for performing more complicated calculations. The results are however useful as a basic estimate of the environments’ role in municipal level greenhouse gas budgets.
