The supply chain consists of delivering the product or service from the producer to the end customer. Companies are trying to concentrate their resources on activities their core competency. For this reason, the supply chain includes several actors that are separate, often own, companies. The flow of information in the supply chain may be challenging between the actors. There may be situations where the exact location of the shipment is not known or the shipment is disappeared completely. The purpose of this thesis was to identify if IoT technology can be used to monitor deliveries cost-efficiently.
IoT is commonly referred to as the Internet of Things, although it is divided into three components: the Internet of Things, the Industrial Internet, and the Internet of Goods. This work presents the possibilities of monitoring the current distribution and exploring the possibilities of IoT technology to follow it. The work compares the features and costs of different IoT technologies.
In conclusion, many things need to be solved before IoT can be fully utilized in subcontracted activities. The use of IoT technology is still at an early stage, so for example, solutions based on 5G technology will help solve the problems that current technologies do not yet provide.
