The aim of this thesis was to describe in detail how first-graders made their own song and how they experienced the song-crafting process. The aim was also to reflect on the challenges that arose during the process and on the measures to solve them, and to develop the researcher's pedagogical approaches in teaching.
The process of composing began with the writing of the lyrics. The words were rhythmized, and the rhythmic text was made in melody. After making the melody, the song was notated and rehearsed. The song was recorded and sent to a composition competition for children and young people related to the Finnish Children's Forest Day, organized by the Didactic Research Group of the Department of Educational Sciences at the University of Helsinki. A music video was filmed of the song, to which, in addition to the video image, photographs of the pupils' visual arts and crafts were attached. The project became a multidisciplinary and multi-artistic, cross-curricular learning entity. Each step of the process was described in detail. Parts of the process were recorded. Recordings and videos form the interaction material of the thesis. Participant observation, which is a form of ethnographic observation, and the analysis of interaction data were used as the main research methods in this thesis based on a qualitative research approach. In addition, a group interview and a questionnaire filled in by the pupils were used as methods in the thesis.
The result of the research was a model for making a song. This model is partly transferable to other teaching groups. Based on the responses to the questionnaire, the pupils felt that the composing process was largely a positive experience. The easiest and most comfortable part of the process was making words and rhythm. As expected, the hardest part was inventing a melody. The researcher's assumptions that everyone can succeed in making a song were confirmed. The thesis aroused interest in further exploring the process of lyrics, perhaps in the form of poetry. The integration of body rhythms and movement into the composition process will also await a new research.
