Depression is one of the most common illnesses in Finland. It affects both the individual and the society. The health and social care system has focused on people’s physical and psychological wellbeing. Lately the spiritual needs have gotten more attention.
This thesis is a qualitative literature study about using spirituality as a resource. The purpose of this thesis is to describe how deacons can support depressed people’s spirituality. The goal is to develop a product that helps depressed people to use spirituality as a resource. The thesis is a part of the project Spirituality and Existentiality/Andlighet, spiritualitet och livsfrågor at Novia University of Applied Sciences in Turku. The project takes place between 2013 and 2016.
The theoretical part of this thesis describes the conception of spirituality, the need of spirituality, depression and methods of treatment, pastoral care and how deacons can support depressed people to use spirituality as a resource.
The result shows that depressed people have spiritual needs and that spirituality can be used as a resource in time of depression. The deacon can support the client’s spirituality. Based on the result I have developed a product: “David stones/Davidstenar”. The product is meant to help depressed people to use spirituality as a resource in times of difficulty.
