Tiivistelmä
Global shipping emissions represented more than 1 000 million tonnes of CO2, and were responsible for around 3% of global emissions caused by human activities. Sea transport is a large and growing area of transport. Over half of global tonne-kilometres are carried by the maritime sector, with over 50,000 cargo ships in operation. Sea transport contributed abt. 30% of logistics sector emissions.

Maritime environmental development has taken huge step forward during last years. Traditionally shipping has been slow moving industry in many areas due to long lifecycle of the vessel investments and global operational business environment. International Environmental regulations are set by IMO (International Maritime Organization) by consensus of 175 states. During last decades, European Union has taken decisions to improve environmental regulations as well as some other authorities locally example individual states of USA. European Union has prepared Fit for 55 regulations including maritime, this theses handles only FuelEU Maritime part of the regulation. This study concentrates environmental regulations and social or governance meters are limited out.

Objective of thesis was to get understanding of best way forward fossil free transportation services to dry bulk shipping company’s clients by measuring scope 3 CO2 emissions as key performance indicators. Different methods to build supportive reporting to clients, vessels and decision-making people by data driven systems was focus of the thesis. Reporting platform has built for clients’ online CO2 emissions follow up. Platform includes possibility to set clients target set up and different fuel scenarios to get understanding of low emission fuel effectiveness.

Target was to increase clients’ knowledge of logistic CO2 emissions before shipping will be included to emission trading. CO2 equivalent calculation was added to the platform even it is not required by the authorities, but meaning to increase understanding of difference of CO2 and CO2 equivalent. Decision to include Maritime to EU Emission Trading System (EU ETS) came out in the end of 2022 and final wording of regulation is missing while writing this thesis.

Challenge of the thesis was changing regulation and missing decisions of sustainability criteria of fuels. Emission calculations of Well to wake and tank to wake emissions has different regulations between the IMO and EU. In my thesis focus was more on EU accepted calculations as trading area of the company is mostly in EU area.
