Tiivistelmä
The rapid and constant growth of the textile industry has become a major concern regarding environmental matters. Being recognized as one of the oldest and largest industries, fashion has exceeded the basic human need levels from normal to extreme product demand. The fashion industry has significantly increased over the years becoming not only one of the biggest industries but also one of the biggest sources of environmental pollution. The aim of this thesis was to investigate the environmental impact of fast fashion. The research has been conducted as a literature review.

This thesis focused on sustainable plant-based waste derived fibers as source of textile production and manufacturing, the main researched fibers were banana fiber, pineapple leaf fiber, sugarcane bagasse fiber, orange peel fiber and PLA/PPeF fiber blends. The main properties and attributes of these fibers were analyzed and discussed, and it was found that all the studied fibers qualify as safe, sustainable, and environmentally friendly with little to no pollution.

Sustainable economic, social, and environmental development was also analyzed and researched and studies showed that switching from linear economy to circular economy can have a positive impact in the textile industry. It was concluded that by eliminating the production of synthetic based fibers and implementing bio-resourced waste derived fibers we can lower the negative impact of the textile industry drastically, however further studies and experimental testing must be conducted in order to understand the qualities and properties of these fibers more thoroughly.
