This research explores the challenges and responses of pharmaceutical supply chains during the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on the themes of resilience, sustainability, and strategic change. A qualitative re-search design was adopted that consisted of semi-structured interviews conducted with 15 experts from various areas of the pharmaceutical industry, i.e., those dealing with supply chain management, procurement, and logistics. Using thematic analysis on the responses, the study found important disruptions, including supply chain disruptions, logistical inefficiencies, and regulatory issues. From the discussion, it emerged that the most important strategies for resilience building were implementing digital solutions, getting supplies from several suppliers, and enhancing the general visibility of the supply chain. Also, findings indicated that adopting sustainable solutions in the form of green logistics and reducing waste thus played an important role in enhancing the resiliency and sustainability of supply chains.
The research extends knowledge on crisis management in pharmaceuticals, illuminating practicable in-sights corporations can use to adjust to disruptions and improve supply chain sustainability. It is learned from the study that building technological competence, employee skill-building, and embracing sustainability underlie risk reduction in future disruptions. This research provides ground practical measures for pharmaceutical companies to enhance supply chain stability to ensure continuous drug access and delivery during major crises such as COVID-19.
