China is an opening market not only in terms of economy but also of culture, especially in the live music business which is developing rapidly. Finland, on the other hand, has a great number of qualified musicians who are eager to perform their music. However, many of them have been limited due to the numbers of the domestic audience. The Finnish live music industry has started to pay attention to a newly found lands in the far East, but the Chinese music market is still new to many Finnish artists. Many mysteries like the atmosphere and the way of doing business are yet to be solved.
This study presents a new point of view for cultural affairs, conflicts and opportunity seeking. Moreover, it defines a new role of a booking agent with a double cultural background by studying the newly introduced six cultural dimensions by G. Hofstede. Furthermore, it presents views of people who have deep roots in the industry. In other words, the thesis focuses on comparisons between Finland and China in terms of the music business and culture in order to find out complementarity, avoid conflicts and look for opportunities.
To support the study, several interviews were conducted and analyzed by using qualitative research methods. The interviewees had profound experience of the music business in China and Finland.
The study reviewed cultural impacts and influences on the music business. The result is a description of the professional state of the Chinese and Finnish music market. The recommendation is that a newcomer to the industry should select and combine the ideas and values of the interviewees so that he or she can benefit from the study.
