Tiivistelmä
Interest in circular economic and sustainable consumption initiatives has grown due to consumers, businesses, and policymakers trying to find ways to minimize resource utilization, and waste accumulation and
to promote resource optimization and product lifecycle extension. Second-hand retails models such as the
Finnish Flea-Market (Kirppis) models provide a real-world example for promoting responsible consumption
by also creating economic opportunities for small scale entrepreneurs.
the main objective of the research was to explore the feasibility of introducing a Flea-Market (Kirppis) style
second-hand retail system in Sri Lanka and to understand its potential viability in terms of consumer behavior, operational management, and sustainability practices. A case study was conducted with a qualitative
approach by conducting semi-structured interviews with consumers, sellers, store management, and employees to collect rich context related insights.
The findings highlighted the importance of having sellers manage their own inventory, mixed revenue
structure consisting of fixed table rentals, and sale commissions, and community-focused interactions
which improve consumer satisfaction and operational efficiency. Cultural attitudes, product quality, and
trust emerged as critically motivating factors towards consumer acceptance. Flea-Market (Kirppis) style
models support sustainable consumption, enhance economic opportunities, and promote circular economy
practices in emerging markets like Sri Lanka provided, they are implemented with proper logistical strategies, regulatory compliance, and strategic marketing
