Tiivistelmä
Tämän opinnäytetyön kohderyhmä ovat kuurojen kuulevat sisarukset, eli sodat. (SODA, Sibling of Deaf [Adult]). Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on selvittää, millainen kuurojen kuulevien sisarusten kulttuuri- ja kieli-identiteetti on, sekä onko heillä samankaltaisia kokemuksia kuurojen vanhempien kuulevien lasten, eli codien (CODA, Children Of Deaf Adult) kanssa. Tilaajana toimii Kuurojen Vanhempien Kuulevien Lasten Yhdistys ry.
The research of this Bachelor’s Thesis focuses on the hearing siblings of deafs (SODA, Sibling of Deaf [Adult]). The objective of this Bachelor’s thesis is to find out about the soda’s cultural and linguistic identities and to figure out if they share similar experiences with Children of Deaf Adults (CODA). The Children of Deaf Adults association of Finland is the subscriber of this Thesis.
The research methods used in this Bachelor’s Thesis were a Webropol survey and a Focus Group Discussion (FGD). The survey was answered by 30 sodas and 38 codas. Three sodas participated in the Focus Group Discussion. The theoretical frame work discusses Deafhood, identities, mother tongue and uni-, bi- and multilinguality.
Based on the research results it became evident that sodas can be bi- or multilingual. The mother tongue of soda’s can be sign language or spoken language or both languages. There are also sodas who are unilingual and use sign language in every day life. The cultural- and linguistic experiences of sodas have been affected by how much their families have participated in events of Deafhood and how much they have used sign language. The results also showed that sodas and codas share similar experiences.
The concept of soda is still relatively unknown. One of the objectives of this Bachelor’s Thesis is to increase awareness about the identities of sodas and to make the concept of the word “soda” more visible.
