Working in children’s foster care is a very demanding and consuming job, especially mentally. Employees’ well-being at work increases with the possibility to use ones strenghts and know-how in everyday work. This lets the employees experience the positive work engagement and enhances their commitment to work and/or the employer and may thus reduce the burden.
The aim of this thesis was to study how to better utilise employees’ strenghts, knowledge, and know-how in the everyday work of children’s foster care. The commissioner of this thesis was Sospro Ltd which is a part of Sospro Group. Sospro Ltd functions in Finland Proper.
The study started with gathering material through a questionnaire directed to all the employees of the commissioner in Finland Proper. After analysing the data, a brainstorming workshop was held for the employees of one of the Sospro Ltd’s foster care homes, small group home Myllylinna.
The Myllylinna team was presented with two possible methods for better utilisation of their strenghts at work: peer mentoring and group development discussion. After choosing the group development discussion, Myllylinna team brainstormed its contents. The workshop produced a five-question group development discussion model that may be distributed to the whole Sospro Group.
The main conclusion of this study is that a healthy employee working with one’s strenghts is, along with an asset to the company, not only the interest of a child in custody but should be seen as one’s right. As the Central Union for Child Welfare is demanding national quality standards for child protection and foster care in Finland, it is of utter importance for the children to receive an employee fully engaged at work.
