Viittomakieli sarjakuvassa : Keinoja suomalaista viittomakieltä käyttävien sarjakuvahahmojen kuvaamiseen

Abstract

Suomessa sarjakuvien ja vieraiden kielien suhdetta on tutkittu paljon muun muassa käännöstieteissä. Suomalaisen viittomakielen kuvaamisen mahdollisuuksia sarjakuvissa ei ole puolestaan aiemmin tutkittu Suomessa. Tutkimuksen ja suomalaisten toteutuksien puute loivat tarpeen tuottaa uutta tietoa aiheesta. Opinnäytetyössä tuotettiin konkreettisia esimerkkejä suomalaista viittomakieltä käyttävien sarjakuvahahmojen kuvaamiseen. Samalla opinnäytetyö kuvaa viitotun kielen ja puhutun kielen ilmenemismuotojen eroja sarjakuvassa. Opinnäytetyön tilaajana oli Suomen sarjakuvaseura ry.

Toiminnalliseen opinnäytetyöhön kuului produktin eli piirrettyjen sarjakuvasivujen sekä kehittämistyötä kuvaavan raportin tuottaminen. Opinnäytetyössä hyödynnettiin fenomenologisen tutkimuksen ja tapaustutkimuksen strategioita tiedon keräämiseen. Kirjallisuuden ja muiden artikkelien lisäksi opinnäytetyössä on hyödynnetty useita erilaisia sarjakuvateoksia. Produkti toteutettiin piirtämällä ensin kuvakäsikirjoitukset ja luonnokset, jotka toimivat pohjana tietokoneella puhtaaksi piirretyille sarjakuvasivuille.

Opinnäytetyön loppuproduktina syntyi yhteensä seitsemän sarjakuvasivua, joissa kuvataan kolmella eri toteutustyylillä kuinka viittomakieltä voitaisiin kuvata sarjakuvissa. Opinnäytetyö osoittaa, että suomalaista viittomakieltä voidaan kuvata sarjakuvissa ainakin kolmella tavalla. Toteutettuja keinoja olivat viittomakuvien ja huuliltaluvun hyödyntäminen, viittomia kuvaavien piirustuksien lisääminen puhekupliin ja viitottujen viestien välittyminen kuulevan hahmon kautta. Toteutukset pohjautuvat samaan käsikirjoitukseen, joten niissä hyödynnetyt keinot ovat verrattavissa. Sarjakuvasivuilla kuvataan myös viitottua kieltä ja puhuttua kieltä toisistaan poikkeavilla tavoilla.

Produkti antaa vaihtoehtoja sarjakuvataiteilijoille viittomakielisten hahmojen kuvaamiseen omissa sarjakuvatoteutuksissaan. Samalla produkti voi mahdollistaa viittomakielen näkyvyyden paranemisen sarjakuvataiteessa. On mahdollista, että opinnäytetyö lisää kiinnostusta suomalaisen viittomakielen tutkimiseen sarjakuvien lisäksi myös muussa taiteessa ja medioissa. Lisäksi opinnäytetyö voi luoda uusia yhteyksiä viittomakielentulkkien ja sarjakuvataiteilijoiden välille.

Comics are published in many spoken languages and there are many studies made concerning comics in the translation studies. Yet, studies regarding the connection between sign language and comics are rarely available. In Finland, studies examining Finnish Sign Language in comics have not been executed as yet.

The purpose of this study was to produce illustrations to show how characters who use Finnish sign language could be portrayed in the comics. Another aim was to find out how sign language and spoken language could visually differ in the comics. The study included producing drawn comic pages and a report. The subscriber of the thesis, The Finnish Comics Society, benefitted from the study since their goals are to enforce the diversity, equality and accessibility of comic art in Finland.

Qualitative research methods were applied. The thesis exploited especially the strategies of phenomenological study and case study, which enabled you to collect information from people’s personal experiences. The theoretical framework of the thesis focused on literature and existing studies concerning comics, Finnish Sign Language, and the methods, which the comics use to portray foreign spoken languages. Different comic books were also examined and analyzed to provide illustrations to support the theory.

As the final products of this thesis, seven comic pages were produced. These pages featured three different illustrations of how Finnish Sign Language could be portrayed in the comics. The pages were executed by making pencil sketches, which worked as foundations for the final comic pages which were drawn with a pen tablet on the computer. The results showed that Finnish Sign Language could be portrayed in the comics at least in three different methods. However, the results also indicated that there are even more ways to illustrate sign languages in the comics, and these three executions are not the only absolute methods in order to portray deaf comic characters.

It should be mentioned that the results of this study base on one person’s personal experiences and therefore the results can not be generalized. People have their personal opinions on how sign language could be illustrated in comics, and these opinions can differ greatly between people. Cartoonist and other comic artists can find the results of the thesis beneficial when designing a comic including a character who uses Finnish Sign Language. The study may also increase collaboration between artists and sign language interpreters in the future. It is possible that this study works as an impulse to increase interest to study how sign language and deaf characters are portrayed in different media.
