This thesis explores the operational solutions and innovations by actors in the cultural field during the excep-tional circumstances caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of this thesis was to map operating models developed in the field of culture, which could benefit all actors in the field. This thesis was commissioned by the Finnish Cultural Foundation (SKR), which aims to develop the cultural field in Finland. The purpose of this thesis was to enable the foundation to utilize the study results when planning its activities.
The framework of this thesis is described in the theoretical section of the thesis and it consists of situations and measures related to the coronavirus pandemic in the cultural field in Finland and worldwide. In addition, the framework deals with changes in the field’s financial structures due to the coronavirus pandemic. In the end of the theoretical section, innovations and digitalization are also discussed.
The research methods were survey, interview and secondary data analysis. The survey explored new and emerging solutions that help cultural organizations continue their operations. In addition, an attempt was made to find out whether new actors or partnerships had emerged during the pandemic.
The survey examined the suitability of the solutions for the respondents’ future activities and for other actors in the field. The interviews, for which the questions were formed utilizing the information provided by the survey responses, focused on the topic in more depth. In the interviews, the solutions were described in great detail. Various documented operating models were also analyzed.
The results indicate that the majority of the respondents resort to the use of streaming technology. Many parties, having considered the coronavirus restrictions, organized their events for significantly smaller audi-ences. Many of the respondents also formed new relationships with other actors in the cultural field. In the end of the thesis, the interviewees' thoughts on the future of the field and their own limits of adaptability are also described.
The solutions and innovations listed in the thesis were the result of a rapid response to the first wave of the coronavirus. The results suggest that solutions for the upcoming year are already in contemplation. If a simi-lar survey was carried out next year, the results would presumably show a wider range of solutions and inno-vations, as there would have been more time to develop them.
