Inclusion plays a significant role in Finnish school culture, which is also enshrined in the Basic Education Act and the curriculum to strengthen students' participation in school on the basis of legislation.
The task of my thesis was to study the experience of students' involvement in their own school community and the staff 's view of what has been done in the school for the experience of students' involvement. The aim of the study was to find out the reasons for the experience of low student participation.
The background of the research is the 2019 School Health Survey, in which 8th and 9th grade students in Uusikaupunki experienced low participation in their own school community. School staff had thought that students experienced good inclusion, which was not answered by the results of the school health survey. The discrepancy between this research result and the experience was started to be clarified through the perception and experience of students and staff.
The thesis was carried out as a qualitative study, to which the students and staff have responded anonymously. The study examined young people's upper secondary school students' experiences of inclusion and agency in their own school community, as well as staff views on student involvement and what has been done at school to promote sociality.
The results showed that school staff have the will to develop activities that increase student inclusion, but more means are needed to implement it. Student union activities were seen as a key participatory activity and a significant channel for influencing. Students were not aware of student union activity as a route to influence and involvement. The experiences of individual students were that they could not specify or were not aware of the kind of involvement they had experienced in school. The students' view of inclusion as a concept was felt to be almost equally a sense of belonging to something other than the agency itself. It is important to consider how to produce comprehensible inclusion for students and this would be an important area for further development. The results of the study can be used at this stage to develop activities that increase students' sense of inclusion.
