Tiivistelmä
Recreational kayaking education in Finland is mainly done by kayak instructors. Kayak instructor is a professional, certified by SMSL (Suomen Melonta- ja Soutuliitto / Finnish Canoe and Rowing Federation), who implements easy day tours and trains beginners in kayaking. Kayak instructors are trained in kayak instructor courses, which offers the participants the tools to implement safe and fun kayaking tours and courses.
This thesis was commisioned by SMSL. SMSL is the umbrella organization of kayaking clubs in Finland and manages the educational system of kayaking.
SMSL is planning to develop an online pre-course learning material for kayak instructor course to enhance the training.
The goal of this thesis was to investigate the need for the pre-course online learning material, and what kind of structure, content and pedagogical approach should there be in it.
For creation of this thesis I explored the content of SMSL's current learning material, similar training curriculums in other countries and sports, and studied relevant learning theories that could be applied to the learning material.
For data research I interviewed kayak instructor trainers and members of the SMSL's kayak education committee, to get professional perspective to the matter.
Based on the theoretical framework and interviews, I developed a framework that includes both structure and content planning. This framework can be utilized in the development of the learning material.
