This thesis explores how experiential learning principles can enhance member participation within Monaliiku Ry, a Finnish NGO promoting integration , diversity and gender equality through sports and physical activities for women and girls, particularly those with immigrant backgrounds. The organization faces challenges common to many NGOs , low participation level of members who pay yearly fee for their membership.
The study uses mixed methods approach , combining surveys and casual interview as a research methods. The key findings from the initial survey have revealed minimal participation, with logistical barrier and communication gaps as primary obstacle. As a promising strategy for enhancing engagement, experiential learning activities that align with personal interest and foster social interactions has emerged as a promising engagement strategy, as identified through the preliminary survey data.
Providing meaningful volunteering opportunities for the members, supported by an intensive training program for the volunteers using role-play as a practical training material has presented as a tool for engaging the participants. The study uses David Kolb’s learning cycle as a basef ramework to create the role play exercise for the training material.. Thus, motivating them to actively participate in other activities offered by the organization. Increased self-confidence , along with a clearer understanding of volunteering in a multicultural context and the experience of supporting women from diverse backgrounds has played a key role in encouraging members to become more actively engaged.
