This thesis is research-oriented done in cooperation with Aseman Lapset ry in Helsinki, Finland. The thesis is based on the data gathered from the Helsinki city mediation office voluntary mediators and Aseman Lapset mediation workers.
This thesis is a study on the cooperation of Aseman Lapset ry and Helsinki city mediation office in the mediation process of children and youngsters in Helsinki. The thesis seeks to find out the viewpoints and experiences from street mediation and to analyse the model, to understand and provide knowledge of the importance of the pilot project.
The thesis also focuses to look at the usefulness of the pilot project, to investigate the strengths and weaknesses. Also, to analyse the benefits, impact and to explain the necessity of the pilot project and provide the required information to the pilot project sponsors. Qualitative research method was used in the data collection.
Research permit was obtained from Helsinki city social service and health care division. Four voluntary mediators and three mediators of Aseman Lapset ry were interviewed with the use of an audio recorder and a questionnaire. To get their viewpoints and experience of their job, the data was later analysed using thematic content analysis by coding for themes and hypothesis that answers the research questions and objectives.
The findings show that street mediation shapes the children. That it has a positive impact and benefit on the children and youngsters plus the entire city. The thesis respondents agree that the street mediation model is the best way to do mediation involving children and youngsters. The findings show that street mediation has a positive contribution to the wellbeing of the society of Helsinki. All respondents said there is additional value in this type of mediation model due to the combination of voluntary mediators and street mediators.
